What leather straps are used on high-end watches?
Friends who usually pay attention to high-end watches may have noticed that top watch brands like Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin all use leather straps, but do you know what leather straps are used for high-end watches? Today, Xiao Ya will explain this in detail.
Why do high-end watches all use leather straps?
1. Most high-end brand watches are crafted from precious metals, such as platinum, white gold, rose gold and yellow gold. Pairing such precious metal materials with a bracelet of the same material undoubtedly greatly increases the cost of the watch, potentially making it more expensive than the watch head itself. Therefore, it is best to opt for a leather strap from an economic perspective.
2. Luxury watches, including models made from precious metals, are mostly dress watches rather than sports watches. From a traditional watchmaking perspective, dress watches are fundamentally fitted with leather straps. This is perhaps a Western tradition, much like gentlemen attending banquets wearing crisp suits. A leather strap undoubtedly adds a touch of refined elegance to the watch itself, an effect that rigid metal bracelets cannot achieve. Precious metal bracelets in white gold and yellow gold appear extremely luxurious, but carry a hint of restlessness while lacking restraint; stainless steel bracelets are exceptionally sturdy and durable, yet lack softness and a snug fit, while also bringing a chill in winter and missing a sense of warmth.
Common types of leather straps
Calfskin strap
Calfskin straps are one of the most common pairings for dress watches. Calfskin boasts advantages such as a soft texture, durability and a reasonable price point, making it deeply beloved by watch enthusiasts. Although most calfskin straps are not considered precious, they take on a unique charm when matched with the right watch. Even distinctive, oversized sports watches can showcase an elegant yet individual aesthetic when paired with a suitable calfskin strap. For instance, the renowned diving watch brand Panerai excels at pairing sports watches with calfskin straps, proving equally suitable for formal occasions with an extraordinary presence. Take Hermès, a luxury brand among luxury brands, for example: the calfskin straps crafted by them can be regarded as top-tier masterpieces among straps, losing out to no precious material straps when paired with dress watch models. Of course, Hermès calfskin straps are absolute luxury items, and their price point rivals any alligator leather strap, making them the ultimate calfskin straps.
High-end straps — Alligator leather straps
High-end is always relative; there is no highest end, only higher ends. Generally speaking, however, the strap most commonly used for luxury watches is alligator leather. Alligators are amphibious carnivorous reptiles with a very wide distribution. There are a total of 23 species of alligators worldwide, mainly including the Mississippi alligator in North America, the Amazonian caiman in South America, the Nile crocodile in Africa, the mugger crocodile in South Asia, the Siamese crocodile in Thailand, the Chinese alligator and the saltwater crocodile in Australia. However, for various reasons—including the precious conservation status of alligators and the nature of the leather itself—not all alligators can be used to make watch straps.
Alligator leather straps and caiman leather straps
Alligator leather straps on the market are mainly divided into two types: one is American alligator leather straps, referred to in English as alligator (some say Mississippi alligator, others say Louisiana alligator; regardless, it is skin from short-snouted alligators). The other type is caiman leather straps, usually labelled with Caiman or Genuine Crocodile in English on the back of the strap. When it comes to material selection, alligator leather straps are extremely selective, and not just any skin from an alligator can be made into a strap. The skin on the back and tail of an alligator is tough, and only the tenderest, softest piece of skin on the belly can be used for a strap, which is one of the reasons why alligator leather straps are so expensive.
How to maintain a leather watch strap
1. Water resistance. Water is the arch-enemy of leather straps, especially rainwater. Rainwater generally contains a certain degree of acidity or alkalinity, which has a corrosive effect on leather and patent finishes. Secondly, there is sweat; sweating while wearing a watch is completely normal, and it is inevitable that leather straps—especially the inner lining—will come into contact with sweat. Nowadays, slightly higher-end leather straps have had their inner linings waterproofed, so general daily perspiration poses no problem and will not cause major damage. However, it is still recommended to keep a soft watch-cleansing cloth to wipe away sweat from the inner side of the strap from time to time, as this extends service life and prevents odours and stains from prolonged soaking in sweat. Furthermore, it is advised not to wear high-end leather strap watches during the hot summer months, otherwise writing off a strap every year is entirely possible.
2. Caring for leather straps requires preparing a soft cloth, a soft brush and a small tub of white or neutral leather conditioning oil. Periodically, roughly every half a month to a month, wipe the strap clean with the soft cloth, then use the soft brush to apply a layer of conditioning oil to the leather, and leave it to dry naturally so that the strap absorbs the conditioning oil. As a result, the leather strap will not become stiff and prone to cracking during the cold winter, but will instead remain soft and conform closely to the wrist, while also gaining a certain degree of protection against water.
3. A deployant clasp allows the wearer to find and set the pinhole position once according to their wrist size, then secure it with the clasp pin. The wearer can put on and take off the watch entirely like a steel bracelet: open the deployant clasp, slip the hand in, close and lock—it is as simple as that. This avoids the wear and tear caused by repeatedly pulling a pin through buckle holes and tightening the strap every day, substantially extending the service life of the strap. Generally speaking, with careful maintenance and by avoiding wearing it in summer, a high-end leather strap can easily last around three years.
