Grading of ETA movements
ETA is one of the world's largest manufacturers of watches and movements, with many watch brands directly using ETA movements in their timepieces. But do you understand the different grades of ETA movements? Let us explore the grading of ETA movements together with Xiaoya.

The 4 grades of ETA movements
1. Standard Grade
2. Elaboré Grade: The craftsmanship of these two basic grades is relatively simple. The jewels used for the bearings are poly-rubies (made from sintered powder). The shock absorbers are also relatively basic. Same as above.
3. Top Grade
Movements of grade Cal.2824 and above, many of which feature carat gold rotors.
4. Chronometer Grade
Famous ETA Movement Calibres
1. 7750 Movement
ETA-7750, originally named Valjoux7750, was originally the most famous chronograph movement from the Valjoux company.
The Valjoux 7750 debuted in 1974 and became a proud flagship calibre for ETA. Over the years, it has been commonly seen in automatic chronographs and complicated watches from various brands. The standard 7750 is equipped with 17 jewels, a 42-hour power reserve, and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It features a unidirectional winding design and uses an index regulator system based on the eccentric screw principle, complete with scale markings to facilitate precise adjustment.
Some say that ETA-7750 is like rotten wood that cannot be carved. It is unclear why they say this; perhaps in terms of artisanal dedication, 7750 is somewhat commonplace, but one truth remains unchanged: simplicity means durability, and durability means reliability. The ETA-7750 is exactly that kind of chronograph movement. The ETA-7750 uses a lever-and-cam chronograph mechanism, which is simple and easy to maintain. Aesthetically, it certainly cannot compare to a Lange 1001 (but that is like comparing a Santana to a Benz), yet in terms of timekeeping functionality, it is indeed one of the best solutions.
The entire watch industry should be grateful for the existence of ETA-7750, because with it, more watch factories can produce chronographs without having to bear the full cost of developing their own chronograph movements. What is the easiest way to identify a ETA-7750? If the sub-dials are positioned at 6, 9, and 12 o'clock, there is a 99% chance it is a ETA-7750, but this rule cannot be applied in reverse.
2. 2892 Movement
ETA2892A2 is used by the vast majority of high-end brands today, including IWC, Omega, and Longines.
It is often used by well-known mid-range brands in their higher-end models, especially chronometers. Even some brands in the luxury watch tier use it, though with more sophisticated finishing and engraving, or by replacing the rotor with one made of carat gold or platinum.
2892 is widely recognised by watchmakers as one of ETA's finest and most stable movements. It features an annular balance wheel, 21 jewels, bidirectional automatic winding, and beats at 28800 vibrations per hour. It is equipped with an "eccentric screw regulator" for easy and precise fine-tuning. Because of its excellent quality, with just a few modifications, it can be transformed into a beautifully engineered movement. The popular Omega Co-Axial watches use a movement that was modified from the 2892 to the 1120 and then further refined. Similarly, Ulysse Nardin's Trilogy of Time astronomical watches also use the 2892 as their base movement, turning them into ultra-small and highly complicated astronomical wristwatches, which are considered some of Ulysse Nardin's greatest masterpieces.
However, the ETA2892A2 also has its shortcomings, namely its winding efficiency, which is an inherent issue with the ETA2892A2. Nevertheless, this problem can be compensated for through appropriate modifications. For example, the Omega Cal. 1120 changed the 3 screws on the rotor to an eccentric fixing, altered the shape of the rotor, and lowered its centre of gravity.
3. 2824 Movement
Along with the ETA 2892-A2 and ETA 7750, it is classified as one of the three treasures of ETA. (Click to view: Watches and styles with the 2824 movement at Golden Watch City)
The ETA2824-2 is stable, highly accurate, and features a manual winding function. Although its price is higher than Japanese movements, it remains the premier entry-level choice for beginners in all aspects. However, due to its low cost, it has become the preferred movement for replica watches and so-called Taiwan-made or Hong Kong-made watches, leading to its over-saturation in the market.
If the ETA2892-A2 is custom-made for the high-end market, then the ETA2824-2 is the darling specifically designed to satisfy the mid-to-low-end market.
4. 6497 Movement
In the past, it was difficult for the 6497 to find a purpose because its size was too large. (Click to view: Watches and styles with the 6497 movement at Golden Watch City)
As trends shift, 6497 has welcomed its own spring—the era of large watches has arrived, and the size of 6497 perfectly caters to the needs of almost all large cases.
Because 6497 is large and has a well-designed structure, its accuracy is once again astonishing. Although it only has the low-frequency beat of 18000A/H, it can easily pass COSC certification, leaving many compact high-frequency movements far behind.
Also related to 6497 is OMEGA's Railmaster, which was once a watch specially designed for railway workers for precise timekeeping. Housed inside the massive case is the 6498 movement, the twin brother of 6497—with only a minor modification to the small seconds position, changing the original 9 o'clock seconds to the traditional 6 o'clock position.
5, 7001 movements
ETA7001 mainly serves the field of small-diameter watch movements.
Its appearance allowed many manufacturers who could not or did not want to develop their own movements to produce small seconds watches. Since its design and manufacture in 1971, subsequent models like 2660, 2691, and 2801 have not been as influential as 7001. Since the size of 7001 is much smaller than 6497, the frequency also increased from 6497's 18000A/H to 21600A/H. NOMOS, one of the three major German brands, rose to fame because of it.
