The most classic chronograph movements
Chronographs are arguably one of the most popular complications. However, the manufacturing process for mechanical chronograph movements is difficult, and only a few manufacturers are capable of producing them. So, what are the classic chronograph movements? Let's take a look at the classic chronograph movements introduced by Xiao Ya.
Classic chronograph movements
Venus movement
A manual-winding chronograph movement, Venus was once a famous movement manufacturer that dominated the last century. As a chronograph movement, it was highly regarded by the industry alongside Valjoux. The Venus company was founded in 1924 by Mr. Schmitz, Mr. P&, and Mr. J.B. Berret. It later went bankrupt in 1969 due to poor management. Because this movement is no longer in production, it is extremely rare on the market and difficult to supply in large quantities for major group brands. Currently, only a few independent watch brands use the Venus movement as a base. The Swiss independent watchmaker Cuervo y Sobrinos once acquired a batch of movements as stock and has released a few watches using this movement in recent years, including classic models such as the Historian series 3188.9B. As one of the best chronograph movements of the Venus50-60s, watches equipped with the Venus movement are currently very rare and precious.
Minerva movement
The Minerva movement manufacturer was established in 1858 and was born in the Villeret region of the Jura Valley. The company was founded in its early years by the Robert brothers, who borrowed the name of the Roman goddess of wisdom. After the founding family exited in 1929, the company was officially renamed Minerva. The company is famous for its achievements in pocket watch manufacturing in the 19th century and its creative technical contributions to chronograph watches in the 1940s. It was used by many major brands and was also a supplier for Panerai movements. To this day, this movement is highly sought after by watch collectors. It was acquired by the Richemont Group in 2006 and became the Minerva SA movement factory in 10, exclusively supplying movements for the Montblanc brand.
Valjoux movement
First should be Valjoux, which is also the movement we encounter most easily and is the most common. Valjoux is named after the Vallée de Joux. This old-established movement manufacturer, located in the village of Les Bioux under the town of L'Abbaye (L'Abbaye) in the Vallée de Joux, was acquired by ETA in the 1980s. If you are unfamiliar with Valjoux, you should be familiar with the ETA7750, right? It was once the largest manufacturer of chronograph movements and supplied chronograph movements to the Rolex Daytona for a long time. Today's 7750 is the last generation of products developed by Valjoux and is now widely used as a standard movement; brands such as Tissot, Mido, Longines, Eberhard, and even IWC and Omega have used this movement as a base for their chronographs. It is currently the most common chronograph movement in the watch market.
Lemania movement
The Lemania movement was once the only top-tier movement manufacturer that allowed SSIH (the predecessor to Swatch) to compete with the Swiss Watch Industry Corporation (ASUAG). The Omega Speedmaster, which successfully landed on the moon, was equipped with this movement. Later acquired by Breguet, it became the exclusive movement supplier for Breguet and ceased external supply. After Breguet was acquired by Swatch, Lemania returned to the Swatch Group. Lemania was founded in 1884 by the famous watchmaker Alfred Lugrin in L'Orient, Switzerland. Alfred Lugrin developed a chronograph movement and quarter-repeater movement patents as early as the 70s of the 19th century, which were purchased by Longines, making Longines chronographs very popular for a time. The famous 1873 chronograph movement launched by Lemania was adopted by many well-known brands such as Breitling and Bucherer. Later, it also acquired the Heuer brand together with Piaget, contributing to Heuer's current achievements in the field of chronographs. The renowned Patek Philippe 5004 chronograph also uses the Lemania movement as its base (the Swiss brand Paul Picot currently uses some of Lemania's remaining stock). Today, it supplies movements exclusively for the Breguet brand.
After reading the above knowledge about classic chronograph movements, let's take a look at the top-tier replica Longines watches recommended by Xiao Ya.
