Why has a newly purchased watch suddenly stopped running?
Many people find that a newly bought watch suddenly stops running after just a few days of wear. What is the usual reason for this, and does it mean the watch is broken? Below, Xiao Ya analyses the reasons why a new watch stops running for your reference.
Reasons why a newly purchased watch stops running
In modern society, many people spend most of their time sitting at work, driving, or travelling in vehicles, with very little walking. Manual winding to supplement power reserve has become essential for wearing an automatic watch. Otherwise, it will cause insufficient power reserve, frequent stopping, and reduced timekeeping accuracy. An automatic watch is not completely self-sufficient in the way many people assume. Therefore, it would perhaps be more accurate to describe an automatic watch as an arm-motion-assisted mainspring winding mechanism.
Severe beat error, or out-of-beat conditions, can also cause a watch to stop. If insufficient shellac is used or if the bonding position is incorrect, a sharp shock to the watch can cause the impulse jewel to detach. The impulse jewel is usually fixed with shellac into the corresponding hole of the roller.
In fact, most watch stoppages are not caused by faults in the balance spring system itself, but specific faults within the balance spring system can still bring the watch to a complete halt. When beat error is severe, the watch may fail to start or come to a complete stop.
Re-entrancy, or over-banking, is one fault that leads to a watch stopping completely. When safety clearance exceeds total lock depth or when the guard pin is too short, sudden external shock and interference may cause the escapement to release prematurely before the impulse pin enters the notch.
Solutions for a newly purchased watch stopping
First, manually winding your watch daily to supplement its power reserve is recommended. This is the most reliable and foolproof method.
Second, wear the watch consistently for over 6 hours a day without taking it off during normal, non-strenuous daily activities. Giving it a gentle shake to start is therefore not entirely without reason.
Third, purchase a dedicated automatic watch winder box. The watch holder inside rotates to keep the movement wound. However, these are quite expensive, generally paired with high-end timepieces, and not strongly recommended.
