Daily maintenance tips for luxury watches
Introduction: Everyone knows that luxury watches are of high quality, but they are also quite expensive. If we neglect to maintain them, the loss is not just the watch itself, but our money too. To extend the lifespan and preserve the appearance of your timepiece, our editor has compiled a series of daily maintenance tips for luxury watches for your reference!
What are the maintenance methods for luxury watches?
1 Watch maintenance
A watch's lifespan is related to whether the wearer uses and maintains it correctly. Habits such as wearing the watch in the bath, letting the exterior become dirty, having an incorrectly adjusted strap length, or using it in harsh environments can easily cause damage and shorten its service life.
Mid-to-high-range watches should undergo routine servicing every two to three years. This includes replacing waterproof components, testing timekeeping performance and movement power consumption, cleaning the movement, and maintaining the exterior. Such servicing will effectively extend the working life of your timepiece.
2 Water resistance
A watch's water resistance is achieved through rubber waterproof gaskets located at the crystal, case back, crown, and other areas, meeting specific standards. All water-resistant watches bear the inscription "WATER RESISTANT" or "WATER PROOF" on the case back. Watches without a water-resistance mark are only dust-resistant and should be kept away from water. A 30-metre (3ATM, i.e. 3 atmospheres) water-resistant watch can be used for daily washing or in the rain, meaning water droplets only splash onto the surface without any water pressure being applied to the watch. A 50-metre water-resistant watch is suitable for swimming and general household chores, while a 100-metre water-resistant watch can be used for swimming, diving, and other underwater tasks.
The degradation of rubber waterproof gaskets will affect a watch's water resistance; therefore, the waterproof gaskets and crown (which contains an internal waterproof ring) must be replaced periodically based on usage. Quartz watches must have their waterproof components replaced every time the battery is changed to ensure good water resistance.
No water-resistant watch should be worn in a hot bath, sauna, or in environments with drastic temperature fluctuations. This is because temperature changes cause the rubber gaskets to expand and contract, creating gaps and accelerating ageing, which leads to water ingress and internal condensation, and can cause serious damage to the movement.
3 The strap or bracelet
Straps and bracelets are categorised into: ceramic bracelets, metal bracelets (tungsten-titanium alloy, solid steel, solid brass, solid powder metallurgy steel, steel mesh, steel wire woven, etc.), leather straps, nylon woven straps, and more.
Ceramic bracelets offer features such as high scratch resistance, hypoallergenic properties, and aesthetic appeal.
4. The two protective features of a watch
In national standards, anti-magnetic and shock-resistant performance standards are represented by the "residual effect", which refers to the difference between the instantaneous daily rate of the watch before testing and the instantaneous daily rate after testing.
Shock resistance: When a watch is accidentally dropped from a height of 1 metres onto a horizontal hard wooden surface, the residual effect of a quartz watch shall not exceed 2 seconds, and for a mechanical watch, the residual effect shall not exceed 60 seconds.
Anti-magnetic resistance: When a watch is accidentally exposed to a magnetic field with a strength of 4800A/m, the residual effect of a quartz watch shall not exceed 1.5 seconds, the residual effect of a men's mechanical watch (with a movement area greater than 314 square millimetres) shall not exceed 30 seconds, and the residual effect of a women's mechanical watch shall not exceed 45 seconds.
5. Tips for removing moisture from a watch
If water accidentally enters the case, you can place a granular substance called silica gel together with the water-logged watch inside a sealed container. After several hours, take the watch out, and all the accumulated moisture will have vanished. This method is simple and economical, causing no damage whatsoever to the precision and lifespan of the watch. Silica gel that has absorbed moisture multiple times can be dried at 120°C for several hours to regenerate its moisture-absorbing capacity, allowing it to be reused repeatedly.
6. Tips for restoring a watch
Once the watch glass has accumulated numerous scratches, you can apply one or two drops of clean water onto the glass, followed by a small squeeze of toothpaste, and rub it to remove the scratches and make the glass look brand new.
7. Watch maintenance tips
(1) When wearing a watch, the sweat on your hands is corrosive to the case. All-steel cases, being made of a nickel-chromium alloy, offer better corrosion resistance, whereas semi-steel cases are made of brass and are prone to corrosion upon prolonged contact with sweat. You should frequently wipe away sweat with a soft cloth or place a plastic watch cushion underneath to prevent corrosion by sweat.
(2) Do not open the case back casually to prevent dust from entering the movement and affecting the normal operation of the watch.
(3) Do not store your watch in a wardrobe containing mothballs, to avoid deterioration of the watch oil.
(4) Do not place your watch on top of radios or televisions to avoid magnetisation.
(5) Watches that are stored and left unworn for long periods should be wound regularly once a month to prevent the components from remaining stationary for too long and to ensure the operational performance of the watch movement.
