IWC launches new Pilot's Watch collection in 2016

       “2016 In, we expanded our entry-level offering with smaller Pilot's Watch models without losing sight of the collection's rich heritage. ”IWC CEO Georges Kern explains: “We have introduced the stylish Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII and the elegant Pilot's Watch Automatic 36, which hold great appeal for men and women with slender wrists who prefer an elegant and understated style. On the other hand, we have also created the authentic large navigation watch, the ——Big Pilot's Heritage Watch, which is reminiscent of the 1940 Big Pilot's Watch. Finally, as in previous years, we are also offering the ‘Antoine •de Saint-Exupéry’ and ‘Le Petit Prince’ special editions, which feature unique design concepts such as a specially designed annual calendar function”. 

       The eye-catching highlights of the current collection are undoubtedly the Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 55 (reference IW510401) and the Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 48 (reference IW510301). Their design is deeply inspired by historical precision navigation watches, which is reflected in more than just their massive 55 mm or 48 mm case diameters. IWC Creative Director Christian • Knoop explains: “In the design of the heritage watches, we have always focused on staying true to the original —— from the dial design to the colour of the luminescent numerals, the shape of the propeller-style hands, and the riveted calfskin strap. The watch looks as if it has travelled back to the era of aviation pioneers, yet it incorporates innovative modern watchmaking craftsmanship. ” This includes the IWC-manufactured movement, a slip clutch that prevents the manual winding mechanism from being overwound, a titanium case, and a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. Christian • Knoop added: “We have equipped the Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch 48 with magnetic field protection, and through the transparent sapphire crystal case back, one can admire the exquisite details of traditional craftsmanship. ”

       IWC has expanded the entry-level models within its new Pilot's Watch collection, making them even more appealing to watch enthusiasts who prefer slightly smaller, elegant timepieces. Measuring 36 mm in diameter, the Pilot's Watch Automatic 36 (Ref. 3240) is the smallest model in IWC's current Pilot's Watch line-up. This timelessly elegant three-hand watch is specifically designed for watch lovers with smaller wrists. The five models feature a choice of three dial designs with clean, uncluttered aesthetics.

       “Antoine•de Saint-Exupéry”and the“Little Prince”Special Edition plays an important role in the Pilot's Watches collection. IWC Schaffhausen has been paying tribute to the French author and aviator, and his most famous work, The Little Prince, with various models since2006and2013respectively. Throughout his life, Antoine•de Saint-Exupéry constantly flew between aviation and writing, technology and poetry. The watchmakers and designers of the Big Pilot's Watch Annual Calendar Edition “The Little Prince” (Reference: IW502701) have now brought these two worlds together: they have engraved a portrait of the famous Little Prince on the solid gold oscillating weight on the case back, showing the Little Prince with wide eyes gazing intently at the sky. The Little Prince rotates on his own axis and winds the watch. Three non-limited Pilot's Watches were also adorned with the “Little Prince” Special Edition midnight blue dial in2016: the Big Pilot's Watch (Reference: IW500916), the Pilot's Watch Chronograph (Reference: IW377714), and the Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII (Reference: IW327004). With the Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Antoine•de Saint-Exupéry” (Reference: IW503801) and the Pilot's Watch Chronograph Rattrapante Edition “Antoine•de Saint-Exupéry” (Reference: IW371808), the designers have inherited IWC Schaffhausen's brand heritage, making them instantly recognisable: all watches feature a tobacco brown dial and a calfskin strap with cream-coloured stitching, reminiscent of the colour of the flight suit worn by Saint-Exupéry back then.
