From 1839 to 1932 – Patek PhilippeThe Origin and Flourishing of Excellent Watchmaking Craftsmanship

In 1812, Mr. Patek was born in Poland and joined the Polish army before he was 16 years old. In 1835, due to the turbulent situation in Poland, Mr. Patek fled to Geneva, Switzerland. While making a living by learning to paint, he saw the infinite future of the watchmaking industry and decided to establish his own watch company. Mr. Patek invited fellow Polish watchmaker Czapek to join his entrepreneurial alliance —— where he managed operations and Czapek was responsible for production. They employed 6 staff members, handcrafting over 200 exquisite pocket watches annually. At that time, in 1839, the initial name was Patek, Czapek & Co.

At the 1844 French Industrial Exhibition, Mr. Patek met the French watchmaker Mr. Philippe. At this exhibition, Mr. Philippe demonstrated his innovative invention: the keyless winding system ——. This epoch-making invention simplified the winding procedure, allowing timepieces to be mass-produced, which was highly appreciated by Mr. Patek, who invited him to join his company. On 1845 5 15, Mr. Patek and Mr. Philippe officially joined forces, promising to work together to produce the world's most exquisite and excellent timekeeping tools. In 1851, the company name was changed to “Patek, Philippe & Cie&”, and thus, the union that would bring about a huge revolution in the world watch industry was formed.

With the development of the industrial age, Mr. Philippe introduced mechanisation into production, strengthened production processes, and combined with innovative and breakthrough watchmaking techniques, Patek Philippe subsequently launched numerous technical patents and representative products, and possessed many glorious historical moments. In 1851, Patek Philippe participated in the London Crystal Palace Exhibition, known as the pioneer of world fairs, and launched the world's smallest timepiece, attracting great attention from world celebrities ——. Even Queen Victoria purchased a Patek Philippe for herself and her husband, Prince Albert.
Mr. Patek had extremely keen market insight, while Mr. Philippe possessed innovative and excellent technology. Under their joint leadership, in 1868, the company reached a new milestone: Patek Philippe produced the world's first Swiss wristwatch for Countess Kocewicz of Hungary. The company thus established a prestigious reputation for its excellent creativity, and from then on, women all over the world became obsessed with its products.
In 1902, Patek Philippe filed a patent application for its split-seconds chronograph. In 1927, Patek Philippe launched and mass-produced its first chronograph wristwatch, some of which featured the split-seconds function. It is worth mentioning that at that time, Patek Philippe had already proposed its brand slogan ——“Begin your own tradition”(“Begin your own tradition”); today, this unique brand philosophy has long been deeply rooted in people's hearts. As time passed, the leaders of the Patek Philippe company changed, but its pursuit of perfection has never changed.

1932 The Stern Family Takes the Helm: Tradition and Transition –

The global economic depression of 1929 had a severe impact on the entire Geneva watchmaking industry. “ It was a difficult era! I particularly remember my father telling me how arduous the environment was at the time; every week they had to decide which gold watch case to melt down to pay the watchmakers' wages. ” (Recalled Thierry • Stern, fourth-generation heir of the Stern family.) At this time, as owners of the renowned watch dial company and the sole supplier of Patek Philippe dials, brothers Charles • Stern and Jean • Stern began funding the operations of Patek Philippe. In 1932, the Stern family officially took control.
Under the strategic adjustments of the Stern brothers, Patek Philippe began to strictly unify its watchmaking standards to ensure that every timepiece bearing the Patek Philippe mark underwent the most rigorous and meticulous craftsmanship certification. At the same time, they actively expanded into overseas markets. — — In 1937, Charles • Stern's son, Henri • Stern, was sent to New York to manage relations with various American distributors. It was a demanding task; Henri • Stern's original six-month stay ended up being extended to twenty-one years.

1958 to 1976 – Henri • Stern EstablishesPatek PhilippeBrand Influence

In 1958, Henri • Stern officially assumed management responsibilities. In the eyes of the workshop technicians, Henri • Stern was always shuttling between New York and Geneva; no detail was too small for him. He was charismatic, tactful, and wise, and above all, he possessed an enduring spirit of independence. ”
From the 30 to the 40s, Art Deco flourished, and in the watchmaking industry, wristwatches began to gain popularity, gradually replacing pocket watches. In 1932, Patek Philippe timely introduced the consistentwatch websiteswww.22biao.com Calatrava collection. — — It was uniquely minimalist, avant-garde in design, and highly functional for daily wear. By this time, Patek Philippe and its workshops had already distinguished themselves in the industry through outstanding craftsmanship achievements; the Graves pocket watch, created for an American banker, became the most complicated timepiece in the world at the time. In 1944, the exceptional technicians of Patek Philippe took top honours in a precision competition held at the Geneva Observatory. 4 years later, the company established an electronics department dedicated to developing new timing instruments: electric, electronic, and quartz devices. In 1953, the company produced its first all-electronic watch and simultaneously launched its first automatic mechanical watch.
Independence and innovation have always been core values upheld by Patek Philippe. In the 20s of the 70th century, with a strong pioneering spirit in the watchmaking world, Patek Philippe launched one of its most classic collections: the Golden Ellipse. In 1976, the Nautilus collection, inspired by the portholes of vintage ocean liners, became a model of avant-garde design upon its release. The following year, building on this foundation, Patek Philippe introduced the Aquanaut collection, characterised by its rubber strap, adding a sporty, fashionable flair to its casual watch offerings.

1977 to 2008 – Philippe Stern LeadsPatek PhilippeTop-tier Watchmaking Professionalism

In 1977, Henri • Stern's son, Philippe • Stern, became the head of Patek Philippe. For a full decade, he led the company through the crisis brought about by quartz timekeeping, establishing an unprecedented position of excellence for Patek Philippe and making the brand a benchmark for manufacturing high-precision and highly collectible complicated timepieces. Philippe • Stern firmly believed that complications were the pinnacle of watchmaking craftsmanship, and what Patek Philippe revered was the combination of “ perfect complexity ” and “ perfect precision ”. In 1989, on the company's 150 anniversary, Patek Philippe launched Caliber 89. This, the world's most complicated portable mechanical timepiece, was the result of nine years of development and marked a new milestone in the company's history.
In 1996, Philippe • Stern moved Patek Philippe from its historic Geneva premises to the modern watchmaking headquarters in Plan-les-Ouates; in the same year, the widely circulated classic advertising slogan “ You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation. ” (“ You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation. ”) was born. In the 90s, Patek Philippe launched the new Grand Complications collection — — perpetual calendar chronographs, minute repeaters, and tourbillon perpetual calendar watches. The company even established a customisation centre and set the annual production at 20,000 pieces. The final decade of the 20th century witnessed the birth of two exceptional watch collections: the rectangular or tonneau-shaped Gondolo collection, inspired by the Art Deco period, and the Twenty~4 collection, designed specifically for women. To commemorate the new millennium, Patek Philippe launched the Star Caliber 6, featuring 21 patents and 2000 complications, reinterpreting the ultimate art of watchmaking and pushing it to a new level.

Driven by a passion for exceptional timepieces, Philippe • Stern collected countless breathtaking unique watches, automatic musical devices, enamel miniatures, and more, eventually establishing the Patek Philippe Museum. In 2001, this watch museum, housing over 2000 pieces spanning 500 years of European watchmaking history and 4000 volumes of books, was finally unveiled to the world in Geneva.

2009 to Present – Thierry • Stern UpholdsPatek PhilippeThe Perfect Blend of Tradition and Modernity

To preserve its purest Genevan heritage, Patek Philippe has always maintained independent family management. As the future heir to the fourth-generation family business, Thierry • Stern spent ten years waiting for the opportunity to work side-by-side with his father.
Thierry • Stern has been immersed in the watchmaking industry since childhood. After completing fast-track studies at the Geneva Business School and the Watchmaking School, he gradually familiarised himself with the essence and intricacies of watchmaking mechanical principles. Afterwards, he was sent by his father to Germany to develop new markets for Patek Philippe. There, he spent two years with two major Patek Philippe retailers —— experiencing the retail and sales sector first-hand and closely observing sales processes and strategies. After leaving Germany, the young Thierry • Stern headed to the United States to work for Patek Philippe's subsidiary. For another two years, he visited all the retailers in this major market. Thierry • Stern started as a blue-collar worker, dedicating himself to learning the component production of straps and exterior watch parts. At the same time, he also began to gradually participate in the introduction of new production methods, especially cutting-edge computer-controlled machinery. From 1998 to 2003, “ I began taking over Patek Philippe product development and design, organising and rationally reforming all internal services so that management could have direct, immediate access to ongoing innovation work. By adopting this approach, the company was able to obtain increasingly precise data, thereby ensuring better time management and cost control in product development.”
Thierry • Stern is determined to secure Patek Philippe's leading position in watchmaking technology. In 2009, Patek Philippe announced a brand-new quality standard for mechanical watches—— the Patek Philippe Seal. This seal embodies the essence of the Patek Philippe workshop, going far beyond official standards—— applying not only to the movement, but extending to the entire watch, from the case, dial, hands, pushers to strap spring bars and more, and even covering aesthetic and functional standards for the finished watch, as well as after-sales service.
Today's Patek Philippe boasts the latest technology on the one hand, using brand-new machinery, computers, and digital information tools to manufacture components; while on the other hand employing watchmakers proficient in ancient traditional crafts who assemble timepieces just as they traditionally did. In the watchmaking school founded by Patek Philippe, older-generation watchmakers also dedicate themselves to training fifteen- and sixteen-year-olds, turning them into a new generation of exceptional watchmakers with superb skills and a heritage of quality.
Currently, Patek Philippe is one of the last remaining watchmakers to complete the entire watchmaking process in-house. Since 1839, every Patek Philippe leaving the factory has been engraved with its own name, and every watch has been recorded in archives. A strong sense of fine craftsmanship, exquisite artistry, and continuous innovation have created the universally revered Patek Philippe.
“ Watch Net: We cannot own time, we can only cherish it. ” Patek Philippe's watchmaking spirit is precisely this dedication to aesthetics, innovation, and heritage—cherishing every timepiece and preserving it for the next generation. The meaning of life is passed down through bloodlines, and between the watch and the wearer, there exists an intangible, silent emotional exchange—— By passing these treasured items on our wrists down to the next generation, we begin to look forward to the future together with our descendants.
