How to Clean a Leather Watch Strap
How to clean a leather watch strap? As leather strap watches are sought after by more and more people, individuals are also beginning to care about related issues. Take the cleaning of leather watch straps, for instance; it requires dedicated maintenance from the consumer to ensure the strap receives the best care. Below, Watch Home takes everyone through how to clean a leather watch strap!
You can use a damp towel to wipe away sweat and oil stains from the inside of the strap first, then submerge the strap briefly in regular white spirit, wipe it dry with a dry towel, press out the alcohol that has been absorbed into the interior, and let it dry. The odour will temporarily disappear.
However, if the inner layer of the leather strap has already moulded and grown bacteria, it cannot be treated; soaking it in alcohol for too long will deform and unglue the strap. Be careful not to use high-strength medical alcohol, as it will discolour the leather strap.
Additionally, cleaning leather watch straps must follow the 3S principle! The so-called 3S principle refers to using a cleanser compatible with the skin (Skin), a soft (Soft) damp cloth, and quick (Soon) natural air-drying. Try to avoid contact between the strap and water. If it accidentally gets wet, allow it to air-dry before wearing it again to prevent odours. In winter, leather straps become much stiffer and easily develop bent shapes; at this point, never fold them backwards to avoid damaging the leather. When sleeping, it is best to place the strap in a well-ventilated area to let the leather pores expand and breathe.
Leather straps are most vulnerable to water and sweat. They are also consumable items that need replacement.
Regardless of the grade of the leather strap, if it is a standard leather strap, it is recommended to replace it every two years, because after prolonged use, the flexibility and tensile strength of a leather strap decrease significantly, meaning it easily becomes brittle. If it is an alligator leather strap, it is advisable to take it to a professional cleaning service every year and avoid handling it yourself.
