Why do mechanical watches need servicing?
As people's incomes continue to rise, friends who love buying branded watches are also steadily increasing. However, for those who are new to watches, many do not know how mechanical watches need to be serviced. We often see watch enthusiasts having questions regarding the maintenance of mechanical watches, so Xiaoya is here to explain the reasons why mechanical watches need servicing along with the maintenance methods. Enjoy reading.
Reasons why mechanical watches need servicing
Traditional manually wound mechanical wristwatches are mainly composed of four parts: the driving mechanism, the gear train, the escapement and regulating system, and the hand-setting/display system (the wearer's operations of winding the watch or setting the time). Currently, many wristwatches also feature an automatic winding function, thereby adding an automatic winding system to the four major systems.
How often do watches need servicing?
A. When servicing a mechanical wristwatch, one mainly needs to consider two aspects: firstly, the water resistance and sealing of the case, and secondly, the quality of the movement. A wristwatch lacking water-resistant performance easily allows dust, moisture, and other impurities to enter the interior of the movement. If mist is observed on the crystal, moisture must be removed promptly. In principle, it is best to undergo a complete cleaning and oiling service. Generally, the maintenance cycle for such watches is within 1 to 2 years.
B. For mechanical wristwatches equipped with water resistance, the maintenance interval depends on the quality of the movement. Generally speaking, the cleaning and oiling maintenance cycle for these watches is 2 to 3 years. This interval should neither be too short nor too long, falling within a reasonable period.
C. For timepieces utilising advanced materials and modern lubrication methods, the interval can be slightly longer; servicing once every 3 to 4 years is generally reasonable.
D. Analogue quartz movement watches also require servicing, ideally after changing the battery 3 to 4 times.
How to maintain a mechanical watch
1、When wearing a watch, sweat on the hands is corrosive to the case. All-steel cases have better corrosion resistance as they are made of nickel-chromium alloy, whereas semi-steel cases are made of brass and are susceptible to corrosion upon prolonged contact with sweat. You should frequently wipe away sweat with a soft cloth or place a plastic watch holder underneath to prevent it from being eroded by sweat.
2、Do not open the case back casually to prevent dust from entering the movement and affecting the normal operation of the watch.
3、Do not place the watch in a wardrobe containing mothballs to avoid deterioration of the watch oil.
4. Do not place your watch near amplifiers, speakers, or televisions to avoid magnetisation.
5. Watches that are stored for long periods without being worn should be wound regularly once a month. Automatic mechanical watches should be gently swung back and forth for a few minutes or worn on the wrist for a period to automatically wind the mainspring. This prevents parts from remaining stationary for a long time and ensures the operating performance of the watch movement.
6. If a standard mechanical watch gets damp, you can place dry cotton over the watch and heat it with a 40-watt light bulb for 5 minutes, and all the moisture inside the watch will be evaporated. If a quartz electronic watch gets damp, you can take a few small pieces of calcium chloride, wrap them in gauze, open the electronic watch back, and place the wrapped calcium chloride and the electronic watch together in a leak-proof plastic bag or glass bottle and seal it. Generally, the moisture can be removed in about 3 hours, returning the electronic watch to normal. For watches with severe moisture, the absorption time can be appropriately extended.
7. When you receive a beloved watch and unpack it, be sure to keep the protective presentation box. These protective boxes offer the safest protection when the watch is not being worn, preventing it from dropping or suffering impacts. Retaining the box is absolute necessity, and making a habit of placing the watch inside when not worn will greatly reduce the chance of damage.
