The proper way to maintain your watch: do you know it?
Water Resistance: Living Up to Its Name
Water resistance in watches is generally categorised as: 30M, 50M, which fall under the scope of daily water resistance. Meanwhile, 100M and 200M belong to the water resistance performance of diving watches. However, these water resistance ratings assume that the temperature is maintained between 20°C and —25°C, and that both the watch and the water are stationary. Therefore, do not wear a watch with daily water resistance for diving; only those rated 200M or higher are suitable for diving.
Adjustment: Regular Timing
Generally, simple watches can be adjusted at any time, but for complex watches featuring calendars, moon phases, or perpetual calendars, do not adjust them between 10 PM and 2 AM the following day. During this period, the gear engagement is low, and frequent adjustments can damage the internal components of the watch, causing irreversible harm.
Winding: Do it yourself
Some watches are automatic, while others require manual winding. When wearing a watch for the first time or after it has stopped, you should manually wind the mainspring rather than relying on the automatic rotor to wind it fully. How do you know when the mainspring is fully wound? During manual winding, you will feel resistance when it is full. Generally, about 40 turns will suffice.
Straps: Adapting to the Seasons
Wear a steel bracelet in summer and a leather strap in winter. Wearing different straps according to the season and weather will help extend the lifespan of both the watch and the strap.
Deviation: The temptation of magnetic fields
Many replica watches now feature anti-magnetic properties, though many do not. Since there are many magnetic fields in daily life, we need to be aware of what affects the watch's accuracy and try to avoid them, such as high-voltage lines, speakers, and large electrical appliances. Furthermore, do not place your watch on radios or televisions. If it accidentally becomes magnetised, take it to a service centre or a watchmaker for demagnetisation; it can be resolved in 2 seconds using a demagnetiser without opening the case. Of course, if you know how, you can demagnetise it yourself.
Placement: Nowhere to hide
A watch cannot be worn twenty-four hours a day. When sleeping or taking it off, it should be placed in a daily watch box, away from electrical appliances and chemical products.
