How to Care for a Leather Watch Strap: Essential Leather Care Tips
Many high-end timepieces are fitted withleather straps, and why is that? Because leather straps are exceptionally comfortable to wear and aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, a quality leather strap is a significant investment, costing anywhere from hundreds to thousands. These straps undergo sweat-resistant treatments to enhance durability. Nevertheless, care is still required in daily life to ensure longevity. Below, we discuss how to properly maintain a leather watch strap.
Are leather watch straps prone to damage?
1. Water is the greatest enemy of leather straps and prolonged immersion must be avoided. Exposure to water, sweat, or chemicals causes leather to age, harden, and become brittle, while the retaining loops can easily deform or snap. Therefore, never wear a leather strap watch while swimming, taking a hot bath, or using a sauna.
2. Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight causes leather straps to discolour and accelerates the ageing of the material. Avoid leaving the strap in direct sunlight for extended periods.
3, Do not pull or tug on the leather strap while wearing it. The areas where the strap is frequently fastened are prone to cracking, and the more the strap is bent, the easier it is to break, so handle the strap with care.

How to maintain a leather watch strap?
1. The main appeal of a leather strap lies in its supple fit, comfort, and elegant character, yet maintaining it can be challenging. It is advisable to wear leather strap watches primarily in winter or air-conditioned environments. During summer or sports when perspiration is likely, avoid wearing leather straps where possible. If worn, wipe away sweat promptly to extend the strap's lifespan.
2. Any type of leather can develop odours over prolonged wear, making proper cleaning and drying the most effective care method. If the strap gets damp, wipe it quickly with a soft cloth; if dusty, clean it with a damp cloth first and dry it thoroughly with a dry cloth. Additionally, prolonged sun exposure can cause the leather to deteriorate or warp, which requires equal attention.
3. Avoid wearing a leather strap watch continuously. Alternating between two or more watches is ideal, as it minimizes wear and tear from daily handling, allows the leather to rest and breathe in a well-ventilated space, and prolongs the service life of the strap.
