How to Identify High-Grade Replica Watches
What is a high-grade replica watch? High-grade replica watches are produced by smaller watch manufacturers who rely on imitating and tweaking mainstream luxury watch designs and functions at a very low cost (much like celebrity impersonators on TV shows). They innovate to create a watch that aims to rival the original product in appearance, features, and pricing.

Distinguishing the quality of high-grade replicas involves four main characteristics. Moulds are often not made to the original watch's exact proportions, typically maintaining a 1.1:1 ratio, resulting in a slightly wider silhouette than the authentic piece. On multi-function mechanical watches, standard replica watches fitted with basic domestic Chinese movements cannot execute complex functions like split-second chronograph timing, making them easy to spot. While standard replicas can achieve decent exterior polishing, subtle finishing details fall short. Most importantly, regarding the movement: even a non-expert inspecting the movement closely can notice that standard Chinese movements look dull in colour; definitive identification of a movement's origin and calibre requires a professional watchmaker.

Domestic Chinese mechanical movements can generally only perform basic timekeeping functions, as Chinese movements are yet to master complex chronograph functions. Higher-quality replica watches opt for Swiss mechanical movements instead. Since major Swiss luxury watchmakers have proprietary manufacturing techniques and produce limited-run movements strictly for in-house use, third parties cannot order genuine manufacture movements to build replicas. Consequently, premium replica watches install classic calibres made by the Swiss manufacturer ETA. ETA is Switzerland's most prominent manufacturer of finished and semi-finished mechanical movements; brands like Rolex and Omega use semi-finished ETA ebauches to apply custom engraving and enhancements. When a high-grade replica uses a genuine Swiss ETA mechanical movement, it is fundamentally identical to the base movements supplied to original manufacturers.

Nowadays, high-grade replica watches extensively use Chinese clone ETA movements, which boast impressive quality and commendable precision, differing from genuine ETA movements primarily in long-term durability. The most common clones are modeled after ETA 2824, 2836, and 2892, with 2836 frequently used in Rolex replicas. Worth highlighting is Sea-Gull's clone of the 2892 calibre, which closely resembles the genuine ETA2892 from its decoration to its exterior. This movement is widely used in Longines replicas, with online prices ranging from around 1000 to 2500.

Watches with chronograph functions mostly use clone ETA7750 movements produced by the Shanghai or Dandong watch factories, with prices generally ranging from 1500 to 3000 RMB. Fiyta's aviation series and Rossini's chronograph watches both utilize the Shanghai-made 7750. Manual-wind watches mostly use clone ETA6497 movements from the Hangzhou or Sea-Gull factories, which are commonly featured in Panerai-style replicas; their precision rivals that of the genuine ETA calibres found in authentic Panerai models. Finally, regarding tourbillons, the tourbillon movements in current high-grade replicas are mostly produced by Dandong or Beijing, with replica watches featuring these tourbillons typically priced between 3000 and 6000 RMB. In truth, Sea-Gull currently produces the finest domestic tourbillons in China, but due to their high cost, replica manufacturers rarely use them.
