How to distinguish a genuine Cartier watch from a replica

Watch AuthenticationPublished

As you know, Cartier is a famous Swiss luxury watch brand with an aristocratic flair; wearing a Cartier watch and carrying aLVleather bag certainly gives the same feeling, which is why it is especially favoured by ladies with a "taste for life." However, there are more and more Cartier replicas on the market, and incidents of buying fakes at genuine prices happen frequently. Below are several methods for preliminary identification of Cartier watches for your reference.

Identifying a genuine Cartier can be approached from the following aspects; you do not need professional watch knowledge, just careful observation to distinguish between genuine and replica.

1, observe the Cartier watchLOGO, the dial

Generally, what most easily exposes a replica isLOGO, especially on the surfaceLOGO. You can use a4x loupe to carefully look at the craftsmanship of the Cartier watch. If it is metalLOGOa genuine watch is usually as bright as new, while a replicaLOGOThe edges are rough and somewhat irregular.;If it is printed lettering, a genuine watch has smooth edges without burrs, whereas a replica has slightly blurred edges with inconsistent depth to the font. Using a8magnifying glass makes it much clearer. The dial can be8magnified to easily reveal traces of hand-writing.

2, inspecting the crystal and hands

Prestigious watches like Cartier generally feature a sapphire crystal, and with technological advances, replicas have begun to copy this too. Replicas with sapphire crystals are generally easy to spot because, to cut costs, they do not apply an anti-reflective coating to the crystal, let alone a double-layer coating. Consequently, they reflect light severely; even though water droplets bead up on them, shining a UV light reveals extreme reflection.;Genuine watches, thanks to the anti-reflective coating, show minimal reflection under strong light and exhibit a purple or blue glare.

When examining replica hands under a loupe, you may find tiny marks left by tweezers during installation; genuine watches will never show such traces. The shape of the hands differs significantly from the genuine article. The second hand on a replica is often crudely made and relatively short, which is a major flaw; on a genuine watch, the second hand is typically equal to or longer than the minute hand. Fake blued steel hands are usually coated with pigment, giving them a slightly transparent appearance, whereas the blue on genuine blued steel is produced through thermal metal processing, appearing deeper with less light refraction.

3, inspecting the crown

The crown of a replica Cartier watch is the easiest giveaway. Replicas tend to use a uniform process where the polished plating is uneven. Whether chrome or gold plated, there are always areas of varying depth, and close inspection may reveal exposed base metal. If the case is made well enough that it is not easily detected, you can inspect the crown section closely. Furthermore, Cartier crowns have their own specific standards, whereas replicas are almost all identical. This is easily spotted by simply looking at genuine watches more often.

4, inspecting the case back, serial number, and movement

Replica Cartier case backs do not follow the manufacturing standards of luxury watches; some replace original screw-down backs with snap-on versions. Interested parties should take note of this. Some genuine watches feature octagonal or multi-screw case backs, but to save costs, replicas often produce a generic snap-on back that mimics the shape of a screw-down one.

Cartier has a fixed numbering system and unique serial numbers for each watch. These numbers can be used to verify the model specifications, production date, and point of sale. Replica Cartier watches often use a single, repeated number or no number at all, making them easy to distinguish. Some genuine watch serial numbers appear in different locations, whereas fakes only place them on the case back.

Generally, replica Cartier watches lack finishing. However, there are now many replica movements on the market with finishing, but a simple loupe easily reveals the crudeness of the workmanship. Each calibre features its own distinct structure rather than being something thatETAof2824inferior items can imitate.

5, inspecting the Cartier bracelet

If you can clearly see signs of manual labour on a Cartier bracelet, it is undoubtedly a replica. While some replica butterfly clasps may appear refined, the moving corners often feature rough, unfinished details; with careful observation, you will find the flaws.

6, weighing the Cartier watch

Modern replicas, to ensure a high level of simulation, often use lead rings inside to match the weight of a genuine watch. However, you can test the weight of other components, such as the bracelet, which will feel significantly lighter. Moreover, replica Cartier watches generally feel light; even with a lead ring used for "ballast", the hand-feel remains unusual.
