An introduction to the Zenith Pilot, as free as the wind
I have towardsZenithalways held mixed feelings. This year, I stumbled into the watchmaking world and have been "hooked" ever since. Timepieces naturally became one of my primary interests. I have looked at various luxury watch brands and top-tier watch brands, but I am most interested in this Pilot watch that flies as free as the wind. Next, I will introduce this watch to everyone.
Introduction to the wind-like Zenith pilot watch

After buying a few entry-level watches, I suddenly wanted something a bit more upscale, so I began spending days and nights browsing forums and doing research. Finally, I settled on Zenith. Before long, I picked the model and agreed on a price. Just as my new Zenith was practically in my hands, things didn't go quite as planned; an unexpected incident beforehand made my Zenith slip away like a cooked duck. Where did it fly off to? Of course I didn't know. But what I did know was that pilot watches were looking at me with affectionate eyes and seducing me all over again.
Named the Heritage Pilot Café Racer, this pilot watch has an overall look full of vintage flair. The striking Pilot lettering is positioned at 6, echoing the Zenith logo at 12 vertically. It is worth noting that while quite a few brands make pilot watches, the word Pilot on Zenith dials is registered by the brand, so in terms of heritage alone, it appears rather authentic.
The design of the Heritage Pilot Café Racer watch is inspired by the British Café Racer motorcycle culture of the 1920s. One being a British biking movement from nearly 100 years ago, and the other a Swiss luxury watch brand with a history of over 150 years, how did these two ever cross paths?
Back then, there was a group of young, rebellious motorcycle enthusiasts in Britain who dreamed of custom-built, fast motorcycles tailored to their personal specs. With these bikes, they could pull out of one café and immediately speed off to the next. Whether these riders liked Zenith is something I cannot say for sure, but their passion for coffee seems certain.
In Europe, coffee is a staple beverage. To be honest, though, I am not much of a coffee drinker. Whenever I have coffee, I end up staring at the ceiling all night, counting sheep until dawn. Even though I do not care much for it, I completely understand those who are addicted to coffee. People addicted to coffee are just like those addicted to alcohol; they simply cannot live without it. Miss a day, and they feel empty inside and thoroughly out of sorts.
These motorcycle enthusiasts went to great lengths to squeeze maximum power out of their bikes, stripping away anything flashy or superficial while retaining elements vital to speed, and fitting low handlebars to give the rugged motorcycles a practical edge.
This Heritage Pilot Café Racer is crafted from stainless steel with a titanium case back, perfectly matching the design ethos of those riding machines of the era. Looking at this watch, the speed, freedom, and originality of that decade feel almost tangible. The titanium case back is engraved with Café Racer Spirit.
With a diameter of 45 mm, calling it a big pilot might be a bit of a stretch. However, for those who love Zenith pilot watches yet struggle to pull off oversized timepieces, this is actually a bonus. The design retains the authentic feel of the pilot collection, such as oversized Arabic numeral hour markers and strong luminescence. You might not notice much during the day, but come nightfall, you will truly appreciate the superb luminescence, as telling the time becomes effortless. A large onion crown sits securely at 3, making time adjustment easy and convenient.
The watch is equipped with a high-frequency movement rivaling the speed of a motorcycle, namely the El Primero 4069 automatic chronograph movement. Its oscillation reaches 36,000 vibrations per hour. As we know, common mechanical watches on the market typically run at 28,800 or 21,600 vibrations per hour. By comparison, a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour is indeed much faster.
Previously, El Primero had no official Chinese name. A few years ago, Zenith pooled ideas and invited watch enthusiasts to come up with a fitting Chinese name for the movement. After rigorous screening, the official Chinese name Xing Su was born. Personally, I think this name is well chosen, combining Zenith’s signature five-pointed star with its trademark high frequency—meaning speed—making it concise, punchy and catchy.
The Heritage Pilot Café Racer watch has a pair of striking eyes, with a charming sub-dial at 3 and 9. The 3 sub-dial is for the 30-minute chronograph, while the 9 sub-dial is for the small seconds. The black chronograph seconds hand sits right in the middle of the dial. Compared to the layout of three sub-dials commonly found on Zenith chronographs, this design is cleaner and more streamlined. The two chronograph pushers are generously sized, taking up most of the space above and below the crown, making them very convenient to operate in practice.
The Heritage Pilot Café Racer watch is water-resistant to 100 metres, and like the vast majority of Zenith watches, its power reserve reaches 50 hours. The RRP for this watch is 59,000 currency.
176 patents, 180 classic movement types, and from this, 500 movement variations have been developed.
