ZenithCombining bold courage, an innovative spirit, and lightweight design with high-tech materials, Zenith introduces an exclusive creation for the El Primero Striking 10th Tenth of a Second chronograph collection: the Lightweight watch, a global limited edition of 100 pieces, perfectly combining a titanium-silicon movement with a highly sporting carbon fibre case. With this masterpiece, Zenith creates a new era for the immortal legend of El Primero, writing a fresh chapter in its illustrious history.
Introduction to the New Zenith Lightweight Sports Watch
As a chronograph, it weighs only 40 grams, half the weight of a standard watch! The watch is crafted from the inside out using ultra-lightweight materials such as carbon fibre, silicon, and titanium, significantly increasing the difficulty of production. During an interview at the global launch press conference, Zenith CEO Mr. Dufour referred to this high-tech product, the 'Lightweight' watch, as the grandson " of the original El Primero watch released in 1969, injecting new vitality into the collection ".
In 1969, Zenith launched the first integrated automatic winding chronograph movement in the history of the El Primero calibre, completely revolutionising watch design with this outstanding creation. The El Primero movement is not only the first integrated chronograph movement, but it also features a high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, allowing the watch to display time units of 1/10 of a second. To this day, El Primero remains the world's most precise mass-produced chronograph movement. Since the advent of the El Primero movement, Zenith has continually refined this legendary creation, endowing it with peerless precision, reliability, and superior performance. Emblazoned with the star symbol, Zenith dares to accept challenges, dedicated to equipping this high-frequency movement with other complications such as a tourbillon, perpetual calendar, and split-seconds function.
In 2010, Zenith launched the El Primero Striking 10th Tenth of a Second chronograph, reinterpreting the "foudroyante" jumping seconds function. This creation is equipped with a central seconds hand that jumps 10 times per second, with the dial divided into 100 graduations, allowing the chronograph hand to complete one rotation of the dial in 10 seconds. This chronograph not only has timing functions but also displays 1/10 of a second (reading time to one decimal place), providing extremely precise and clear readability. Because this mechanism requires a vast amount of energy, the Zenith manufacture employed lightweight silicon dual chronograph gears to power the mechanical device—a material weighing 1/3.5 that of standard alloys.
Today, Zenith presents a new innovation, upholding lightness, refinement, uniqueness, and superior performance as its tenets, introducing an even sportier and more avant-garde El Primero Striking 10th Tenth of a Second chronograph with a spirit of perfection. Combining innovative technology and bold creativity, the engineers and watchmakers at the Zenith manufacture have dedicated themselves to crafting an unprecedented "Lightweight watch". Much like developing a racing engine, while reducing the weight of the watch to the absolute minimum, they also had to ensure the timepiece's precision, reliability, and durability.
Zenith's experts began with the movement, conducting dedicated research into material selection to choose the best components. Because titanium possesses lightweight and durable properties, Zenith decided to use this metal, commonly found in aerospace, to build the main movement components: the mainplate and five bridges (barrel bridge, balance bridge, chronograph bridge, pallet bridge, and escape wheel bridge). When brass is used, these 6 components account for the vast majority of the total weight; therefore, using titanium significantly reduces the overall weight of the watch. In addition, the Zenith manufacture also uses silicon to craft the chronograph dual gears, and equips it with a silicon pallet lever and escape wheel. Silicon is a lightweight, non-magnetic, high-tech material that is not only harder than stainless steel but also safeguards the movement's superior performance. This outstanding design yields astonishing results: a standard movement weighs 21.10 grams, whereas this movement weighs only 15.45 grams, a weight reduction of nearly 1/4.
Regarding the exterior of the watch, designers have redesigned the 42 mm case of the tenth-of-a-second chronograph, subtly increasing the case size to 45 mm while ensuring an incomparable sense of lightness on the wrist. Zenith has chosen carbon-encased ceramised aluminium for the case material, whose striking black lustre and checkered design evoke motor racing. This novel material not only meets the brand's weight requirements but also lends the watch a high-tech appearance and sporting spirit. The internal structure of the case boldly employs ceramised aluminium, a cutting-edge material that is not only lightweight but also boasts exceptional strength and hardness (the Vickers hardness of ceramised aluminium is 1800, whereas the Vickers hardness of stainless steel 316L used in most watches is 160-200). The two chronograph push-pieces and the crown are made of titanium, while the skeletonised lugs perfectly accentuate the streamlined profile of the timepiece, echoing the strap seamlessly.
In addition, it is worth mentioning that the strap is made of Nomex? material with an embedded natural rubber protective layer, paired with a triple-folding clasp to enhance wearing comfort and security. Nomex? is a synthetic fibre developed by DuPont, and due to its extremely low flash point, it has become a dedicated material for making racing suits for F1 racing drivers, offering fire retardancy and thermal resistance. Today, Nomex? synthetic fibre is utilised by firefighters, racing drivers and armed police officers.
The dial of the new El Primero Lightweight also displays distinctive features, dynamically reinterpreting the design style of this collection. The central part of the dial features a skeletonised design, which not only reduces weight but also allows the El Primero movement to be seen in full view. The date display system has been redesigned to be lighter than before, indicated by red numerals on a window positioned at 6 o'clock. The faceted hour markers also heavily adopt an open-worked design and are coated with Super-LumiNova. The sub-dials on the dial feature the brand's signature colours: the iconic tri-colour chronograph counters representing the past, present and future (light grey, dark blue and anthracite), paying tribute to the original El Primero watch launched in 1969, bringing the brand's classic colours to the fore. Meanwhile, the red seconds hand adorned with the Zenith star can display fractions of a 1/10 second, a high-precision mechanism demonstrating peerless technological prowess that is reminiscent of a Formula One dashboard.
The El Primero Lightweight embodies masculinity, sporting style and contemporary flair, perfectly interpreting the innovation capability and bold courage of the Zenith manufacture, leaving a striking mark on the brand's collection. This piece showcases avant-garde and innovative technical achievements, interprets youthful vitality, and bears witness to the boundless future of the El Primero movement, which will present even more exciting new creations. The Zenith manufacture will celebrate the brand's 150th anniversary in 2015, with the El Primero Lightweight showcasing the brand's unique philosophy of striving for excellence and perfection.
