Patek Philippe timepieces are widely regarded by watch collectors as the pinnacle of fine watchmaking. As the only universally acknowledged king of horology, often dubbed the "blue-blooded royalty of watchmaking", it imparts a sense of brand pride and honour to every wearer. So do you know why Patek Philippe is crowned the king of watches? Read on to find out.

  The Patek Philippe Seal

As the benchmark for the highest Swiss watchmaking standards, the Patek Philippe Seal established by the manufacture surpasses all existing criteria in the Swiss horological industry. Crucially, this quality benchmark applies not merely to the movement, but to the entire cased watch. As brand leader Mr Thierry Stern once noted, Patek Philippe delivers a complete timepiece to its clients, rather than merely specific movement components of a finished product. Naturally, every watch continues to uphold the uncompromising precision standards that Patek Philippe has demanded from the very beginning. Unlike current industry standards (such as COSC certification) that test unmounted movements in a static state, Patek Philippe tests fully assembled timepieces dynamically to better reflect real-life wearing conditions and timekeeping accuracy. The reason is simple: clients purchase a complete wristwatch, not an isolated movement, and expect that watch to maintain flawless accuracy. Since encasing a movement inevitably affects overall accuracy, ensuring the precision of the finished timepiece is paramount.

Although ownership of Patek Philippe changed in 1933, the Stern family committed to offering lifetime servicing and restoration for every Patek Philippe timepiece manufactured since 1839. This is no casual promise; restoring antique movement parts requires over a century of technical heritage and archived records—a pledge that perhaps only Patek Philippe can make within the Swiss watchmaking industry.

Patek Philippe is one of the very few Swiss watch brands capable of manufacturing an entire timepiece completely in-house, including every movement component, such as the balance spring, case, and dial.

  Patek Philippe's Sovereign Quality

Every detail of a Patek Philippe watch undergoes rigorous inspection to achieve optimum results, ensuring exceptional quality, exquisite design, precise timekeeping, and reliable performance. The decorative finishing on all components—including the movement, case interior and exterior, dial, pushers, and crown—must be immaculate and flawless. Throughout the watchmaking process, the aesthetic appearance of every component is systematically evaluated. Even fully finished timepieces are 100% subjected to strict quality control.

The timekeeping accuracy of a Patek Philippe watch must be tested at various stages of production, whether as a raw movement or fully encased. The final accuracy testing phase is conducted using kinetic wear simulators, and the measured results must strictly satisfy the following Patek Philippe precision standards:

For movements with a diameter of no less than 20 mm, the rate accuracy tolerance must remain within -3/+2 seconds per day.

For movements with a diameter under 20 mm, the rate accuracy tolerance must remain within -5/+4 seconds per day.

The acoustic chime of every minute repeater must be measured with acoustic instruments before receiving personal approval from Philippe Stern and/or Thierry Stern. Since 2003, the acoustic profile of every chime watch has been archived.

Regardless of the extent of chamfering and polishing operations, the profile and proportions of all parts (movement and external elements) must remain unchanged. Finished cases and bracelets, no matter how complex their geometry or surface finishing, must conform strictly to the master design template. Sharp edges are strictly prohibited.

For gem-set timepieces, diamonds must adhere to uncompromising quality standards: clarity must meet IF (Internally Flawless), colour must correspond to Top Wesselton standards, and the cut must be impeccably perfect. Gemstones must be set perfectly upright, parallel in alignment, and identical in height. Every stone must be securely anchored.

Applied faceted numerals and hour markers are crafted from gold and mechanically fixed to ensure long-term stability. The hands are likewise made of gold; hands of any other material may not be used unless required by specific technical or aesthetic considerations.

Regarding the movement, the sides of the steel components must have a satin-brushed finish, while their bevels and recesses are polished. Exposed surfaces must be polished smooth, with the exception of the regulator assembly, which must be polished. Screw heads must be polished or decorated with circular graining, with their edges and slots bevelled. The movement's jewel bearings must feature polished pivot holes, particularly those for the time-train, specific automatic winding wheels, and the escapement. Unless it affects the stability of the jewel bearing, jewel bearings on bridges must generally be rounded with polished recesses. The exterior surfaces of the mainspring barrel and barrel cover, as well as the click, crown wheel, and various circular components, must undergo meticulous surface finishing. The tooth flanks of the steel escape wheel must be polished using a wooden wheel. The top surface of the bridges must be decorated, with the bevels and recesses polished. The bottom and sides of the bridges must also be meticulously finished. Contact surfaces are machined using precision equipment and feature bevelled edges. The mainplate and bridge plates are decorated with circular graining on their surfaces. Openings on the full-plate mainplate are bevelled, with polished recesses. The balance spring must be fitted mechanically to ensure a perfect flat-coil shape. This fitting method must ensure that the shock-resistance performance of the hairspring complies with NIHS standards.

Except for ultra-thin movements without a regulator, provided that a stabilisation device can be integrated, regulators featuring pointers or slots are permitted simultaneously. For traditional balance wheels, the rim must be bevelled and diamond-polished. The spokes must be sandblasted or decorated with circular graining on the top surface.

You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation. This is not merely an advertising slogan, but a supreme brand commitment.
