Introduction to the Tudor Watch Brand

TudorPublished
When mentioning Tudor, people often think of Rolex. As a sister brand to Rolex, Tudor is frequently considered an 'affordable version' of Rolex, which aligns with the brand's original intention. 'For some years now, I have been considering the idea of making a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standard of dependability for which Rolex is famous. I decided to form a separate company, with the object of making and marketing this new watch. It is called the Tudor Watch Company.' This statement was announced by Mr Hans Wilsdorf on 6 3 1946. Having founded Rolex in the early 20th century, he was already a leading figure in Swiss fine watchmaking. This announcement not only marked the birth of Tudor watches, but also established the brand's marketing strategy. Now, let us explore what makes Tudor so special.

  Introduction to Tudor Watches

  TUDOR OYSTER PRINCE (1963)

Between 1947 and 1952, Tudor spared no effort in launching the Tudor Oyster and Tudor Oyster Prince series, both demonstrating a seamless blend of precision, reliability, stylish aesthetics, cutting-edge technology and exceptional quality. The brand originally used the rose symbol as its logo, which was long a symbol of the Tudor dynasty that ruled England. Mr Wilsdorf drew inspiration from this when naming his new company. While this was undoubtedly an honour for the new brand, the company did not rest on its laurels. From its inception, the company focused on technical developments, such as the waterproof Oyster case and automatic winding movements. Later designs incorporated more stylish elements, ensuring the watches met the dynamic demands of modern life in both function and appearance.

Guided and influenced by Rolex at its inception, Tudor quickly carved out its own path and established a distinct brand identity. Looking back, the history and early creations of Tudor date back to 1926, when the Swiss watchmaking company Veuve de Philippe Hüther registered the brand on behalf of Mr Wilsdorf. In 1936, Mr Wilsdorf took over the company and established 'Montres Tudor SA' in 1946. However, it was the products and advertising campaigns of the 50s in the 20th century that truly established the brand's competitive edge and unique character.

The Evolution of the Brand Logo

In 1952, the Tudor Oyster Prince was launched, accompanied by a series of powerful and creative promotional campaigns. These advertisements went beyond the product showcases and explanations common at the time, utilizing extensive text alongside imagery to convey durability, reliability and precision. Besides traditional sporting settings like motorcycling, golf and horse riding to demonstrate performance, imagery also depicted men wearing Tudor watches whilst working hard in extreme environments, such as on roads and in coal mines. These visuals successfully established a stylish yet dependable character for Tudor. Following its release, the British Royal Navy also carried 26 Tudor Oyster Prince watches on its scientific expedition to Greenland in 1952.

  TUDOR PRINCE SUBMARINER (1964)

In the 1960s, they dedicated themselves further to the research and development of professional diver's watches. Between 1964 and 1966, the Tudor Prince Submariner became official issue for the US Navy, and from the early 1970s to 1984, Tudor's Marine Nationale models were adopted by the French Navy. Beyond diver's watches, Tudor also began introducing racing chronographs in the 1970s, giving rise to their classic Montecarlo series during this era. Relying on product quality and the major backing of its parent brand Rolex, Tudor achieved considerable commercial success in the 1970s. However, Tudor subsequently drifted further from Rolex, and its products grew increasingly lacking in distinctiveness, leading to declining market visibility and a prolonged period of quiet.

  TUDOR GRANTOUR (2009)

The year 2009 was an important and standout year for Tudor. The brand formed a 'Timing Partner' relationship with Porsche Motorsport and introduced the new co-branded Grantour series at the 2009 Baselworld show. That year, Tudor focused on shaping its brand image, launching a new watch collection alongside the advertising campaign: 'Designed for Performance. Engineered for Elegance.' Evolving through the 80th century into the 20s, Tudor introduced assertive designs reflecting the steadfast spirit of a knight, transitioning its brand logo from the rose emblem to the shield. This repositioning once again highlighted the perfect combination of technology and style, seamlessly embedded in the new designs of 2010.

  TUDOR ADVISOR (2011)

In 2011, Tudor re-issued its Advisor alarm watch from the 1950s. Although another replica model, the alarm module added to the movement in this Advisor was developed entirely in-house by Tudor, demonstrating that the brand is not only pushing boundaries in design but also investing effort into professional watchmaking. The ocean was the theme for 2012, and inspired by its diving watches from the 1950s, Tudor designed two modern diving watches that combine brand heritage with high performance: the Heritage Black Bay, which is both retro and stylish, and the Pelagos, a robust professional timepiece. In recent years, Tudor has grown increasingly distinctive.
