Cartier Tank series watch - the continuation of a legendary classic
The design of the Cartier Tank series watches was inspired by the minimalist and robust lines of military tanks first deployed on the battlefield, and its classic styling has become a continuation of Cartier's legacy. Below, Yaya introduces the classic Cartier Tank series, and everyone is welcome to read.
Introduction to the Cartier Tank series
In 1917, the first Tank watch was created. Following the end of the First World War, Cartier presented a prototype watch to John Pershing, who served as the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces during WWI. It is said that Louis Cartier himself was the one who linked the brand-new timepiece to another invention of that era, the Renault tank. In 1919, the Tank watch was released for sale. The case is square, representing the main body of the tank, while the vertical brancards on either side represent the tank treads, providing a clever means of attaching the strap. In the book The Tank Watch, published in 1998 by Franco Cologni, the mirroring and accentuating effect of the two parallel vertical brancards on the movement and overall structure is illustrated. Roman numeral hour markers, a railway minute track, blued-steel hands, and a winding crown set with a cabochon sapphire—this pioneering design has been passed down and maintained to this day.
Early Cartier Tank series
Over a century, regardless of how markets and trends rise and fall, the Tank watch has always adapted with ease. In 1922, Cartier launched the Tank Chinoise watch. During that era, the Western world was fascinated by everything originating from the East, particularly China. Inspired by temple lintels, the Tank Chinoise features two raised horizontal bars that correspond precisely with the vertical brancards on each side. In 1978 and 1979, Cartier successively released two new Tank Chinoise watches for men and women. In 1928, when the market showed interest in digital displays, viewing them as more modern than traditional hour and minute hands, the Tank à Guichets watch came into being.
Some clients wanted a watch that could flip over to protect the dial and allow personalised engraving. In response to this demand, the Tank Réversible watch emerged in 1932. Designed using Cartier-Jaeger-LeCoultre patented technology, the Tank Réversible became the inspiration for the Tank Basculante watch (renamed in 1992). Historically, only 416 pieces of the Tank Basculante were produced, making it highly sought after by collectors due to its scarcity. The Tank Must watches, issued starting in 1977, belonged to the Must de Cartier collection, featuring a gold-plated silver case paired with lacquered dials in various colours, offering a more accessible price point that was widely loved and welcomed by younger customers.
Today's Cartier Tank series
Today, the Tank series is mainly divided into five models. The Tank Louis Cartier remains faithful to the original 1922 design, rooted in the Art Deco style. The Tank Américaine watch, launched in 1989, follows the appearance of the Tank Cintrée watch (1921); although slightly larger and more square in appearance, the case still retains a curved design. In fact, the Tank Américaine was also Cartier's first watch equipped with a curved water-resistant case.
In 1996, the watchmaker and jeweller achieved a brand-new breakthrough: the Tank Française watch. The curved case is positioned in the middle of a chain-link bracelet styled like tank treads; functioning as one of many links, it does not disrupt the smooth flow and continuity of the overall lines. The case and bracelet blend together into a unified whole, resembling a bangle-style watch more closely.
Having read the above, Yaya will now introduce a replica Cartier Tank series watch, with a degree of simulation that can compare with the genuine version.
