Watch buying tips for men
For men, wearing a watch is not just about telling the time; it is more about showcasing personal quality. So, what should men pay attention to when buying a watch? Today, Xiao Ya shares some tips and precautions for men when purchasing watches for your reference.
Tips for men purchasing watches
1, considerations for choosing the watch case type. Common case materials include K-gold, gold-plated, titanium, stainless steel, semi-steel chrome-plated, and alloy cases. K-gold cases are only used for high-end luxury watches, which typically cost tens of thousands or more. Semi-steel (where only the case back is stainless steel) chrome-plated watches are considered low-end, as the case is prone to corrosion.
2, those who sweat easily, exercise frequently, work outdoors, or are in long-term contact with chemical acids or alkalis (such as medical workers) should wear stainless steel cases. Chemical reagents containing mercury can cause extreme damage to K-gold and gold-plated items, causing the gold to discolour. It is best to avoid copper-based electroplated crowns, cases, and the inner side of bracelets, as they are easily corroded by sweat, causing the plating to peel off.
3, the spring bars between bracelet links and the clasp are the parts most prone to issues during wear; be sure to inspect them carefully when purchasing. Some clasps, such as the 'butterfly' type, can be problematic after long-term opening and closing, and ceramic bracelets are prone to shattering; these factors should also be considered before purchase.
4, some people are not suited to wearing automatic watches. Those with insufficient daily activity, the elderly, the frail, or those with sedentary jobs should avoid automatic watches. If activity levels are insufficient, the mainspring will not be fully wound, leading to frequent stopping, insufficient power reserve, or the watch stopping when taken off. Additionally, the watch's accuracy may decrease. Therefore, it is recommended that those with low activity levels choose quartz watches or manually wound mechanical watches.
5, the value of a watch is primarily reflected in the brand, followed by its exterior components. Setting aside the exterior, the movement quality and differences between watches of similar grade and style are often minimal—for example, Longines and Omega—yet their prices differ significantly. Therefore, to find a watch with high value for money, it is not strictly necessary to choose a well-known luxury brand.
Precautions for men purchasing watches
1. Inspect the exterior components of the watch
The exterior of a watch can be inspected via the case, crystal, dial, and hands. The case should be free of pits and obvious scratches, with symmetrical edges. The seal between the case back and the main case should be tight. The distance between the lugs and the case should be equal, and the spring bar holes should be centred at the tips of the lugs with appropriate depth to prevent the strap from detaching. The crystal should be free of defects and scratches, clear and bright. The three hands should be installed correctly, with proper safety clearance between the hands, crystal, and dial. The dial and hand plating should be clean and smooth, without blemishes, and the dial markers or luminescence should be complete. There should be a gap of approximately 0 between the crown and the case. 1—0. 3mm gap.
2. Check the sensitivity of the watch
The sensitivity of a watch refers to the ease with which its balance wheel starts automatically. The inspection method is:
1) Gently shake a watch that has not been wound and has stopped to observe the movement of the second hand: if the second hand stops within a very short time, it indicates that the watch can fully exhaust its power reserve once wound (meaning the mainspring has no remaining torque), indicating high sensitivity. If the second hand continues to move for a long time, it indicates that the watch cannot fully exhaust its power reserve once wound (meaning the mainspring still holds torque), indicating low sensitivity or a fault in the movement.
2) For a watch that has not been wound and has stopped, slowly turn the crown and observe when the second hand starts: the fewer turns required to start the second hand, the higher the sensitivity of the watch; conversely, the sensitivity is low or there is another fault. Note, however, that high-beat watches require slightly more winding to start due to the higher stiffness of the hairspring compared to traditional frequency (18000 beats/hour) movements. Highly sensitive watches will run for a longer duration after being fully wound.
3. Check the clearance and position of the watch hands
A certain distance should be maintained between the hands and the crystal, the dial, and between the three hands themselves; otherwise, friction will affect the normal operation of the movement. This can be checked by adjusting the hands. The method to check if the hour and minute hands are positioned and aligned correctly is: set the minute and hour hands to 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock to see if they form a right angle; set them to 6 o'clock to see if they form a straight line; set them to 12 o'clock to see if they overlap.
IV. Checking the watch winding mechanism
A normal watch should wind smoothly. When turning the crown to wind, it should feel loose at first, gradually becoming tighter. When the crown can no longer be turned forward, it indicates the mainspring is fully wound and the winding mechanism is working correctly. If you hear an abnormal 'clicking' sound or experience slipping while turning the crown, it indicates a fault in the winding mechanism.
