How to determine the quality of a mechanical watch

Functional GuidesPublished
Put simply, a mechanical watch is neither electronic nor powered by a replaceable battery, meaning you never have to worry about it running out of power. Visually, you can tell the difference between a mechanical watch and a quartz watch at a glance: the second hand of a quartz watch ticks in one-second intervals, whereas a mechanical watch features a smooth, continuous sweep. Its timekeeping relies on an intricate internal mechanical movement, requiring winding to provide the necessary power to ensure accuracy. While its precision may not be quite as refined as that of a quartz watch, a mechanical watch has a daily variance of ±30 seconds, which has no impact on daily wear.

Simply put,Mechanical watchit is neither electronic nor requires a battery replacement, so there is no need to worry about running out of power. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, one can instantly distinguish between a mechanical watch and aQuartz watchesquartz watch; the second hand of a quartz watch ticks once per second, whereas a mechanical watch sweeps continuously. Its timekeeping relies on sophisticated internal mechanical components, requiring winding to supply the power needed for precise timekeeping. Naturally, the accuracy is not quite as fine as that of a quartz watch, with mechanical watches having a tolerance of ±30 seconds per day, which does not affect daily wear at all.

  Manual versus automatic

Mechanical watches are divided into automatic and manual-winding models. As the name suggests, manual models require you to wind them by hand before the power reserve runs out to ensure normal operation. Automatic models, in principle, do not require manual winding as long as normal daily wrist movement provides sufficient power, making them relatively more convenient than manual versions. Distinguishing between manual and automatic models is very simple: check the case back to see if the movement features a oscillating weight, which is semi-circular and off-centre, and will swing when the watch is shaken.

  The "inconveniences" of mechanical watches

Another "troublesome" aspect of mechanical watches is winding. For manual watches, many consider winding a particularly major hurdle; if one is not careful, they might forget, or fail to operate it properly, or even dare not "touch" it, causing the watch to stop. Of course, automatic models are not maintenance-free either; because everyone's daily wrist activity varies, automatic watches need to be worn for a certain duration, otherwise insufficient hand movement and inadequate mainspring barrel power reserves will cause stoppage. When stopped, manual winding is still required to supply power and ensure normal operation.

  The winding process

Does it still sound troublesome? Yet some people truly enjoy the pleasure and even sense of achievement brought by this winding process. Of course, others worry that winding it too fully might snap the mainspring, deterring them from doing it themselves. In reality, this is not the case. For manual winding under normal circumstances, if you wind it fully every morning upon waking, throughout the 24 hours of the day, the energy gradually decreases from the moment it is fully wound. With automatic winding, aside from sleeping, the mainspring is continuously being wound during other normal activities, and you never have to worry about excessive movement over-tensioning the power reserve, as there is a special protection device to ensure the mainspring will not break.

  Affinity and choice of movement

The choice of a mechanical watch largely depends on the individual. If you prefer pure mechanics without excessive flashy embellishments, German watches are worth considering. German watchmaking is just like the Germans themselves—rigorous and practical above all else. Aesthetics serve performance, renowned for their minimalist design. Brands such as A. Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original feature the signature German large date display, maintaining simplicity without losing aesthetic appeal.
