How to adjust watch time accurately?
After using a mechanical watch for a period of time, it is inevitable that timekeeping deviations will occur, at which point you will need to reset the time promptly. However, I am sure many of you have experienced a situation where no matter how you try to adjust the time, it never seems quite right, which can be extremely frustrating. Today, Anya will share some simple tips for adjusting your watch time accurately for your reference.
Methods for adjusting watch time accurately
1, A watch achieves its best timekeeping precision when fully wound
To keep your watch running accurately, you must ensure the mainspring is wound as fully as possible. This is particularly important for automatic watches, as the degree of tension in the mainspring is directly related to wearing time and physical activity, provided that a sufficient level of movement is maintained.
2, A watch exhibits different timekeeping precision in different positions
This is known as positional error in watches. Higher-quality watches are tested at three temperatures and in five positions before leaving the factory. The five positions are: dial up, dial down, crown down (3 o'clock down), crown left (12 o'clock down), and crown up (9 o'clock down), with only the crown right position (6 o'clock down) being uncommon (unless you wear the watch on the inside of your wrist or on your right hand). Statistics show that most people use their watch in the dial-up position for about 35% of the day, crown left for 30%, crown down for 25%, and other positions for 10%. Therefore, by taking advantage of the differing precision errors of a watch in various positions, you can correct its tendency to run fast or slow.
3, Observe and test first, then record the results
The testing method is very simple. First, fully wind the watch, then align the hours, minutes, and seconds of the watch being tested with a standard time source so they are synchronised. Place it flat and let it run for 24 hours, then compare the error against the standard time and record it. Repeat this process in sequence, testing and recording the running error of the watch in the dial-up, crown-down, crown-left, and crown-up positions respectively.
For example: If the static test results are: dial-up +20 seconds/day, dial-down +20 seconds/day, crown-down -5 seconds/day, crown-left +25 seconds/day, crown-up +10 seconds/day, then the actual daily wearing error of the watch is +15 seconds/day.
4, The timekeeping precision of a mechanical watch cannot be permanently achieved or maintained through calibration
Why is this the case? Because the timekeeping of a mechanical watch is constantly changing. Under a specific mainspring tension, fixed position, and temperature environment, it may be temporarily accurate, but it will vary relative to other conditions. In other words, even if you calibrate a watch to be accurate to the second, it will not stay that way; precision is always fluctuating in the moment. Furthermore, many other factors affect watch precision, and the errors we observe are merely the actual running error and the average error over a given unit of time.
5, Take off your watch at night and choose the appropriate resting orientation to correct errors
Taking the scenario in the example above, it is clear that placing the watch with the crown facing downwards at night will help reduce the accumulated running error of the watch. Only by having an accurate understanding of the causes of your watch's errors and its specific error characteristics can it serve you better.
