How to Choose: Longines vs Mido
Introduction: Longines and Mido are both excellent watch brands, and it is difficult to say which is better or stronger. Today, I will analyse these two brands to help you make an informed decision.
Longines—The Watch of Elegance
Longines was founded in 1832 and is a Swiss watch brand with a history spanning over 180 years. Although the brand once promoted in China that: 'A yellowed receipt kept in the Longines sales archives records that the first Longines watches arrived in China as early as 1867, and were appreciated and loved by the Chinese official and scholar classes from the very beginning,' the Longines we are familiar with today re-entered the Chinese market in 1994. Over these 20 years, Longines has consistently focused on elegance in its marketing and has gradually achieved great success. In China, Longines has always enjoyed strong sales. Over the past 2013 years, while most watch brands were affected by the Chinese government's austerity policies, Longines' sales in China reached the top globally, surpassing Italy and Japan.
Longines focuses on watches in the 1–3 price range and firmly holds the top position in this segment. Many brands are positioned here, but Longines' greatest advantage lies in its rich product line and diverse styles. Regardless of your requirements, you can find a suitable watch within the Longines collection. Elegance is synonymous with Longines and represents a lifestyle that many aspire to. The brand's strong sales in China are inseparable from its steady, step-by-step accumulation.
With the changes in the domestic luxury consumption market in China, more brands are setting their sights on the 1–3 price range, and even larger brands are positioning new products in the 2–5 price range. It remains to be seen how Longines will respond to the increasing competition, but having already grasped the consumer psychology of the Chinese market and secured a first-mover advantage, Longines will surely handle it with ease.
Longines has many collections. The La Grande Classique de Longines collection is loved by many for its slim case and various dial sizes; the Master Collection, equipped with meticulously polished and modified ETA movements, is favoured by many mechanical watch enthusiasts; and the DolceVita collection, designed specifically for women and endorsed by the beautiful Lin Chi-ling, has captured the hearts of many women.
Mido—Just Right
Mido entered China in 2000. This was not its first time in the Chinese market, but with the strong support of the Swatch Group, its re-entry has clearly been very effective. Over the past decade or so, Mido's points of sale have blossomed everywhere, making it easy to find a Mido counter, which also means Mido enjoys excellent sales in China. Mido's designs are often inspired by classic architectural masterpieces, translated into straight lines on the watch. Mido's styles often feel conventional yet never boring. Many of its dress watches are perfectly executed, making them an excellent choice for entry-level mechanical watches.
Mido draws inspiration from the magnificent architecture of ancient Rome, the rhythmic flow of time, and modern architectural masterpieces—the pride of New Yorkers—to continuously develop the classic Swiss Mido brand. Mido's watchmaking philosophy is to combine timeless design with practical functionality rather than following trends. True design stands the test of time better than fleeting fashion. Mido aims to create watches with high-quality materials, precise movements, and excellent water resistance that can be owned for a long time. Mido also intends to create a watch that becomes your close friend; one that brings you joy when you look at it and is there for you when you need it. Mido is a highly reliable watch—a Swiss timepiece full of personality to accompany you for a lifetime.
Conclusion: Both brands belong to the Swatch Group, the world's largest watchmaking group. Compared to other brands that also use ETA movements, they are supported by systematic sales and after-sales services. Therefore, for simple functional watches, both brands are highly competitive. Longines offers watches with more complex functions, while Mido offers entry-level models at lower prices. To each their own.
