Are Longines quartz watches good?

LonginesPublished
In 1832, the Swiss watchmaker Auguste Agassiz began his watchmaking business in Saint-Imier. Later, his nephew Ernest Francillon expanded the operations and established a workshop in Les Longines, Switzerland, in 1866. In 1867, Francillon registered the "Longines" company name, marking the official birth of the brand; that same year, the first Longines movement, the L20A, was introduced. From 1867 onwards, every Longines timepiece has been engraved with the winged hourglass emblem. In 1880, Longines became an officially registered trademark in Switzerland, making it one of the oldest trademarks in Swiss watchmaking history. In 1885, Longines won its first Grand Prix at the Antwerp International Exhibition. Longines subsequently earned a series of international honours, including setting a record by winning 10 Grand Prix awards. Entering the 20th century, wristwatches gradually replaced pocket watches. In 1905, Longines produced its first mechanical wristwatch, and in 1912, introduced an extraordinarily innovative square wristwatch, introducing elegant geometric design to watchmaking. At the Swiss Federal Gymnastics Contest held in Basel in 1912, Longines became the world's first watch manufacturer to launch a fully automatic timing system. By the 1920s, Longines had mastered timepiece design and manufacturing. Its new Art Deco style won immense market acclaim, and Longines watches featuring geometric design principles became synonymous with elegance. In 1927, aviator Charles Lindbergh completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris, relying on a Longines instrument for timing. Lindbergh later specially designed a timepiece for Longines, which served as the prototype for Longines navigation watches. By the 1930s, Longines timepieces had become essential equipment for several famous explorers. The 3000th Longines wristwatch was produced on 19 2 2001. In 1994, after nearly half a century, Longines re-entered the Chinese market. By 2003, sales of Longines watches in China ranked first globally, surpassing sales in Italy and Japan. Longines is a company founded by Ernest Francillon in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. Its origins trace back to the 30s in the 19th century. Longines also holds the oldest registered trademark in horology (a winged hourglass). Today, the Longines company is part of the Swiss Swatch Group. Longines is renowned for its Aviator watches. Following his successful transatlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh designed a timepiece to assist with aerial navigation. Longines watches were initially produced for his specialized aviation needs. So, are Longines watches good? Let us take a look.

Are Longines quartz watches any good?

  User reviews

Comment one: Longines quartz watches are quite beautiful and very elegant for formal wear. I also have one, but be careful to buy a large dial; mine has a slightly small diameter because I bought it a long time ago (7-8 years ago). The price is not expensive, starting from around 3000 after discounts, which is quite good. Moreover, maintenance costs are low; basically, you just need to change the battery every few years, and you can do that at a small street-side watch repair shop. However, if you like watches, it is more fun to get a mechanical one now.

Comment two: Buying a watch in this style from Longines is mainly because the appearance is elegant, and the price is not very high. Therefore, it is more cost-effective to buy a Longines electronic watch at a low price point, but it is not worth it to buy an electronic watch at a high price point.

Comment three: If you are buying Longines, you should choose a mechanical watch. For quartz watches, Rado is better.

Comment four: Longines quartz watches are more suitable for women; men should opt for mechanical watches, as they appear more steady and sophisticated. Furthermore, Longines quartz watches have poor resale value and do not possess the same collectability as mechanical watches. Additionally, the lifespan of a quartz watch is at most 30 years, and replacing the battery in between can be somewhat troublesome.

Comment five: Longines is a Swiss watch brand. The lowest price for a Longines quartz watch is around 5000 yuan. Swiss mechanical watches are very famous, but their quartz watches certainly do not compare to Japanese movements. Therefore, it is better to choose a Japanese electronic watch.

Comment six: Like their mechanical counterparts, Longines quartz watches feature natural and elegant designs. At the same time, due to their lower price point, Longines quartz watches are not at all ostentatious and possess a great sense of substance.
