What makes chronograph movements so good?
Chronograph is a term frequently seen by watch enthusiasts, though not everyone knows what it means. There is a saying in the watch world that a chronograph movement is more expensive than a tourbillon. Do you know what makes a chronograph movement so good? Follow Xiaoya below to find out.
Introduction to chronograph movements
The word chronograph comes from two Greek words: "chrono" meaning time, and "graph" meaning to write, which together mean "to record the world". In fact, the cost of a chronograph movement is even higher than that of a tourbillon.
The earliest chronograph was invented in 1821 by a Frenchman named Nicholas Rieussec. Because he loved horse racing, the chronograph he invented at the time was used to time horse races.
Chronographs at that time were not as complex as they are today, featuring only start and stop functions. However, using "ink dropping" to calculate time was simple yet true to its original purpose: when timing began, the dial rotated, and upon pressing the stop button, a drop of ink fell onto the dial, serving as the marker to show the elapsed time.
Timing steps: mainly composed of three actions: start, stop, and reset. Once these actions are triggered by the pusher next to the watch, they are primarily operated by a series of levers and gears within the movement.
The chronograph features a column wheel mechanism, a precise jumping minute counter, and a flyback function. It matches the instantaneous perpetual calendar, moon phase display, and Lange large date display. The movement is hand-finished to the most rigorous Lange standards; the wearer can admire the inner workings of the movement through the sapphire crystal case back, appreciating the layout of the timing mechanism surrounding the tourbillon. The watch features a patented stop-seconds device; pulling out the crown instantly halts the balance wheel, allowing the time to be set with second-precision.
