Elegant and noble, the new IWC Spitfire chronograph

      Since its introduction in 2006, the Spitfire chronograph crafted by IWC Schaffhausen has enjoyed widespread popularity. Now, the IWC watch appears with a fresh look, paired with a blue-grey dial and an IWC-manufactured 89365 calibre, achieving ultimate perfection.

      As early as when the Spitfire was first designed in the 1930, the Royal Air Force also sparked a trend in society — — where it became a club of passionate youths who came from wealthy backgrounds, dressed fashionably yet elegantly, drawing attention wherever they went. Classic elegance and technical innovation are the hallmarks of the new Pilot's Watch Spitfire collection. For the first time, IWC is introducing a standard Spitfire chronograph with a 18K red gold case. The models with references 387802 and 387804 feature stainless steel cases. The surfaces of the cases are hand-polished to a high lustre or finished with a fine satin brush, creating a magnificent appearance. A sunburst finish causes sunlight refracted on the blue-grey dial to emit a dazzling, dynamic radiance. The exquisite Spitfire engraving on the case back harmonises with the polished and satin-brushed surface finishes. The dark dial and date display incorporate altimeter-style design cues, bringing it closer to the “ instrument look of classic pilot's watches. This chronograph is water-resistant to 6 bar, and the case diameter has been slightly increased by 1 mm to 43 mm for enhanced legibility.

Rooted in the early days of aviation

      Another pioneering feat: the Spitfire chronograph is powered by an IWC-manufactured 89365 calibre, which provides a power reserve of 44 to 68 hours when fully wound. At the same time, this new movement features a flyback function, which allows you to “ clear ” an ongoing timing record and immediately restart a new timing cycle. This mechanism stems from early aviation requirements — — when pilots needed to navigate specific curve radii within time limits. The hands of the watch are coated with luminescent material and closely resemble propeller blades. The subdial at the “ 12 o'clock ” position displays elapsed minutes, while elapsed seconds are indicated by the central sweep hand. The red stationary small seconds hand in the subdial at the “ 6 o'clock ” position indicates that the watch is operating normally. The convex sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides is securely fitted to withstand sudden drops in air pressure without coming loose.

     The red-gold model is paired with a brown leather strap and a classic pin buckle. The stainless steel version features a newly developed stainless steel bracelet, the micro-adjustable clasp of which allows the length to be adjusted freely. Both the pin buckle and the folding clasp have been slightly modified to complement the increased case diameter.

     Take a step back to the 1930s, and the Spitfire chronograph would undoubtedly have been adored by British aviation elites. Today, the gentleman who chooses to wear this timepiece showcases an elegant sense of style and exceptional taste.
