Switzerland—Recently, the renowned Swiss watchmaker SchaffhausenIWClaunched three limited-edition Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante models specifically for Milan, Paris, and Munich. Following its debut in 1995, the IWC Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante once again brings a high-horology legend to life. The highlight of these three extraordinary timepieces is the addition of a third pusher used to start and stop the split-seconds hand, allowing for the measurement of two different short intervals simultaneously, accurate to the second, in addition to traditional chronograph functions.

In 1995, IWC launched the first Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante (Ref: 3712), which cleverly combined the elegant design of the Portugieser collection with a sporty split-seconds chronograph function, capable of measuring two short intervals simultaneously—a truly pioneering innovation. IWC CEO Georges Kern stated: "The Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante is not only a prime example of IWC's exquisite mechanical craftsmanship but also an iconic piece for fashion enthusiasts." The first model featuring this function was released in 2006 and has now returned. In 2016, IWC dedicated itself to creating three special limited-edition timepieces to reinterpret this classic collection while paying tribute to the brand's boutiques in these three European cities.

What makes these three special limited editions unique is that each case back is engraved with a meaningful motif. The Milan boutique edition features the unique limited-edition number and the "Biscione" grass snake motif, which is not only the emblem of the Visconti family but also a symbol of the city of Milan. The Paris boutique edition is engraved with the Vendôme Column located on Rue de la Paix in Paris, along with the Latin motto "Fluctuat nec mergitur" (She is tossed by the waves but does not sink), highlighting the cultural spirit of Paris. The Munich boutique edition is engraved with the iconic Frauenkirche, one of the city's most important landmarks.

The split-seconds hand can be instantly synchronised with the main chronograph hand

In addition to traditional chronograph functions, the split-seconds chronograph is equipped with a rattrapante mechanism. Two chronograph hands are stacked in the centre of the dial and begin running in sync when the chronograph is started. By pressing the third pusher at 10 o'clock, the upper hand stops while the lower hand continues to run until the stop button at 2 o'clock is pressed, allowing for the measurement of two different short intervals. Pressing the split-seconds button again causes the hand to instantly catch up with the main chronograph hand, regardless of whether it is stationary or moving, to resume synchronised operation.

The IWC Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante Milan and Paris boutique editions are already available at the IWC Milan boutique and the IWC Rue de la Paix boutique in Paris, respectively. The Munich boutique edition is expected to arrive at the IWC Munich boutique in the spring of 2017. Watch enthusiasts can register their interest by emailing the IWC Customer Service Centre starting today.
