Introduction to Swiss ETA6497 movements

Article ArchivePublished

The history of the Unitas movement factory began in 1898, founded by Auguste Reymond in Tramelan, in the German-speaking region of Switzerland. Later, it began producing finished watches for the Auguste Reymond brand (formerly known as Arsa, which closed during the quartz crisis and was reborn in 1989 as Auguste Reymond). Unitas only produced various models of basic manual-winding movements and never made automatic or chronograph movements. Known for their stable performance, they were merged into the Ebauches group (what we now collectively refer to as the ETA movement system) in 1983. ETA currently retains only UNITAS6497/6498 pocket watch movements. Initially, these were merely provided to a number of manufacturers, including Tissot, that still produced pocket watches. However, with the trend towards larger watches, many manufacturers began using these two movements in wristwatch models, with Panerai being a prominent example.

Since its introduction in 6497/6498 in 1950, it has retained the traditional gear train design of pocket watch movements while simplifying the complex barrel design, making it suitable for mass industrial production and assembly. Its low cost combined with the stable quality of a large movement has long been favoured in the industry, serving as an excellent teaching tool for apprentices. ETA produces blank versions for smaller manufacturers, while high-end manufacturers modify them for their own use. ETA also continues to improve this movement, such as increasing the power reserve and switching to 21600 high-frequency, to adapt to modern requirements. It can be said that 6497/6498 follows a typical Swiss standardised movement route, which is versatile and has significant room for development.
