The Difference Between Mechanical and Quartz Watches
Through our previous introduction towatch classifications,it is clear that timepieces generally fall into two main categories: mechanical and quartz. Both types offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, catering to different preferences and maintaining their own share of the market. As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Let us guide you through the key differences between mechanical and quartz watches.
Simply put, a mechanical watch relies on a mainspring within the movement to drive the gear train and move the hands,Watchwhereas a quartz watch relies on battery power to drive the gear train and move the hands. The fundamental difference is that mechanical watches feature a winding mechanism, whilst quartz watches are powered by a battery and lack manual winding components. Most noticeably, mechanical watches are generally heavier and thicker than quartz models.
A quartz watch replaces the traditional balance wheel of a mechanical watch with a quartz oscillator, using its precise high-speed vibrations to track time. Quartz timepieces are divided into analogue and digital displays. Analogue quartz watches divide the high-speed vibrations of the quartz crystal into electronic pulses, using a stepping motor to turn a gear train that drives the hour, minute, and seconds hands for precise timekeeping. Digital quartz watches send these electronic pulses through integrated circuits to display numbers directly on a liquid crystal display (LCD), making them fully electronic timepieces with no mechanical transmission.
Quartz is a white oxide composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2). When placed inside an oscillating circuit, the quartz crystal vibrates and transfers its precise frequency to the circuit under specific conditions. When applied to a quartz movement, the quartz crystal oscillator converts electrical energy into kinetic energy to drive the watch hands. Modern automated manufacturing allows circuit boards for quartz watches to be mass-produced with resistors and capacitors. Once fitted into a case with crystal and strap, a quartz watch is assembled. The main advantages are exceptional accuracy, lightweight construction, and simple maintenance. However, the battery typically requires replacing every one to two years. Furthermore, after five to eight years of use, the quartz oscillator may degrade, reducing timekeeping accuracy and requiring replacement. In today's industry, high labour costs mean replacing minute individual components is rarely cost-effective; hence, major faults usually lead manufacturers to recommend replacing the entire movement .
Mechanical watches are generally divided into two types: manual winding and automatic winding. Both rely on a mainspring within the movement to drive the gear train and hands, differing mainly in how power is supplied. Manual-wind watches require manual winding by hand; their movements are slimmer than automatic versions, making the overall watch lighter. Automatic watches use an oscillating weight at the back of the movement that swings with wrist motion to wind the mainspring, resulting in a slightly thicker case profile. The main advantage of a mechanical watch is its longevity when regularly serviced and lubricated. The drawback is lower precision compared to quartz, as craftsmanship varies and internal movements are susceptible to gravitational interference. Accuracy for mechanical watches is typically measured in seconds per day, whereas quartz watches are measured in seconds per month.
The comparison above shows that mechanical watches hold higher collectability and status than quartz timepieces, making them ideal gifts. However, they share a minor variance in daily precision. Quartz watches offer accurate timekeeping and accessible pricing, making them well suited for daily personal wear.
