Cartier walks into the Forbidden City

Article ArchivePublished

It is truly difficult to live; among these exquisite exhibits, one must accept various external pressures and face one's own inner confusion. In the midst of struggling, if someone casts a look of understanding at you, you will feel a warmth of life. Perhaps it is just a brief glance, but it is enough to make me feel inspired.

Showcasing Eastern and Western art

This exhibition will beCartier watchthe largest and most extensive exhibition in the Art Collection series. Mr Pierre Rainero, Director of Image, Style and Heritage at Cartier, stated: 'This time, the Cartier Treasures Art Exhibition has come to the Palace Museum, which also represents our deep respect for China's ancient culture and brilliant artistic achievements.' (Chongqing Evening News, Liu Meina)

On 7 2, the Palace Museum and Cartier jointly announced that the 'Cartier Treasures Art Exhibition' will be held at the Meridian Gate Gallery of the Palace Museum from 2009 9 5 to 11 22. From the Duchess of Windsor's panther brooch to the French Academy sword of literary master Jean Cocteau, and the 'Mystery Clock' filled with exotic and magical colours, to the Qilin bracelet steeped in ancient myths, all will meet the Chinese audience one by one.

As one of the world-renowned museums, the Palace Museum has always been committed to bringing high-end cultural and artistic exchanges between China and foreign countries into the public eye, thereby promoting the dissemination and exchange of Eastern and Western art and culture. Cartier is an outstanding representative of European traditional and contemporary decorative arts. We hope that this exhibition can provide a broad horizon and a valuable platform for the vast number of Chinese audiences to experience the integration of Eastern and Western cultures, said Mr Ma Jige, Deputy Director of the Exhibition Department of the Palace Museum.

Forbidden City Exhibition:

Cartier's largest scale in history

Selected from thousands of treasures in the Cartier Art Collection, the 346 exhibits on display are representative works from the brand's inception until the 20s of the 70 century. In addition to luxury jewellery and exquisitewatchpieces, rare design manuscripts, archival documents, and other historical records fully display the ultimate charm of the 'Jeweller of Kings, King of Jewellers'.

Among these magnificent exhibits, there are many historical masterpieces inspired by the ancient Eastern world, including lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, ancient jade carvings, and mythical creatures drawn from ancient Chinese fables and legends. These treasures serve as evidence of Cartier's century-long deep connection with China, a manifestation of the perfect crystallization of French avant-garde innovation and Eastern art, and a profound tribute by Cartier to Chinese civilization and art.
