Exuding supreme majesty--Rolex

Article ArchivePublished
Hans Wilsdorf was born in a Bavarian city in 1881. In 1905, he partnered with an Englishman named Davis in London to found the firm "Wilsdorf & Davis", beginning the watchmaking business. On 1908 7 2, Wilsdorf registered the Rolex trademark in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. From then on, the global watch industry gained a luxury brand and witnessed milestone innovation after milestone innovation.

In 1914, a small Rolex watch was awarded a Class A certificate by the Kew Observatory in the UK, which is the highest level of recognition for timekeeping precision from an authoritative observatory. This accolade greatly enhanced Rolex's prestige, and for the following decades, Rolex became synonymous with "precision".

In the 1926 years following the end of the First World War, Rolex introduced the world's first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch, the famous Rolex Oyster. In 1927, a British female swimmer crossed the English Channel wearing this waterproof watch. After being immersed in water for a full 15 hours, the Rolex watch continued to keep time to the second and operated normally. At the time, the British media hailed this as "the greatest triumph in watchmaking history." This firmly established Rolex's leading position in water-resistant watch technology.

In 1931, Rolex produced the Perpetual watch, which later became immensely popular and brought about a revolution in the watchmaking industry. The centre arbor of this automatic watch features an oscillating weight that converts the slight movements of the wrist into power for the watch, thereby eliminating the need for manual winding. This was universally recognised at the time as the most precise and reliable self-winding watch technology. In 1945, Rolex introduced the world's first wristwatch with an automatically changing date, and in 1956 launched a calendar watch featuring a day display available in 26 languages.

Rolex watches have always been renowned for their professional functions, earning them deep admiration from professionals worldwide. In 1955, Rolex invented the pilot's watch to enable people to measure precise time across different time zones. In the same year, Rolex's diving watch developed for deep-sea divers was released, boasting a water-resistance depth of 100 metres.

Currently, Rolex professional watches mainly include the following categories: the Explorer II, equipped with a 24-hour red auxiliary hand to help exploration enthusiasts distinguish between day and night. The Submariner, with a water-resistance depth exceeding 300 metres. The Yacht-Master, featuring a rotatable bezel for easily calculating time differences. The GMT-Master II, whose rotatable bezel and 24-hour hand not only simultaneously display the time in two time zones but also allow the hour hand to be independently moved to another time zone without adjusting the minute or second hands. The Cosmograph, a multi-function watch designed to meet various engineering, sporting and commercial needs.

The original logo used by Rolex was an open palm with five fingers spread, signifying that their products were entirely crafted by hand, which gradually evolved into the crown familiar to today, showcasing Rolex's royal status in the watchmaking industry. On the international market, an ordinary Rolex watch ranges in price from 1000 USD to 15000 USD. Although expensive, people still consider it value for money, not only because of Rolex's superb quality but also due to its unique investment value. Vintage Rolex watches possess exceptional value retention; at an auction held in Geneva in 2002, a 1952 model Rolex perpetual calendar gold watch previously owned by Bảo Đại, the last emperor of Vietnam, fetched a record-breaking 34.2 hundred thousand Swiss francs (approximately 23.54 USD at the time).

During the mechanical watch era of the last century, Rolex was consistently a global leader in the watch industry. To this day, supreme craftsmanship and technology continue to maintain Rolex's prominent position in watchmaking. Currently, Rolex has branch offices in more than 20 major cities worldwide, with an annual output of approximately 80 ten thousand pieces, firmly securing its sales leadership in the Swiss watch industry.
