How to demagnetise a mechanical watch?
If a mechanical watch becomes magnetised, it significantly affects the accuracy of its timekeeping. So, if a mechanical watch is magnetised, how can we demagnetise it? Below, Xiaoya shares methods for demagnetising a mechanical watch for your reference.
How to demagnetise a mechanical watch
Demagnetisation method one: send the watch to a professional watch shop for demagnetisation. Magnetisation is a relatively common phenomenon nowadays, and the solution is not difficult. You only need to go to an authorised service centre to use specialised equipment for demagnetisation. In just 30 seconds, the watch can be demagnetised, with no impact on the watch's performance.
Demagnetisation method two: if you are far from a watch repair shop, you can also demagnetise it yourself. The specific method is: find a hollow, circular piece of iron that has not been affected by magnetisation, stand it upright on a table, and then the magnetism on the watch can be "absorbed" by the iron piece, restoring the watch to normal. Another way is to use a magnetised iron can that is open at both ends, and move your beloved magnetised watch back and forth inside the can for 5 to 6 minutes to demagnetise it.
Why do mechanical watches get magnetised?
Various types of permanent magnets are also widely used in electrical appliances, typically in speakers and motors. Both magnets and DC magnetic fields can magnetise "hard magnetic" materials such as steel. There are many steel materials in mechanical watches, such as the ratchet wheel, crown wheel, escapement wheel, gear pivots, bearings, screws, and the hairspring. Once the hairspring is magnetised, the watch will stop running immediately. A magnetised watch may not show any problems in the short term, but over time, it will run slower and slower.
