IWC Brand History

IWC was founded in 1868, with a watchmaking history of 137 years. The founder of IWC was Florentine A. Jones, an American engineer from Boston, who established one of Switzerland's earliest mechanical watch factories by the Rhine, realising his innovative vision – using machinery to replace some manual labour to produce more precise components, which were then assembled by top watchmakers into watches of exceptional quality. IWC is known as the "engineer of high-end timepieces", specialising in the manufacture of mens watches. Classic styles combined with ingenious designs, elegant and refined, with extremely simple operation – this is the renowned IWC watch.

Portuguese collection

Tracing back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Portugal far surpassed other major powers in maritime exploration and was thus hailed as the most outstanding navigation expert of the time; they not only discovered new shipping routes and lands but subsequently helped the Swiss watchmaking industry flourish, even as late as nineteen thirty-six in the twentieth century. At that time, two Portuguese merchants, Rodrigues and Teixeira, visited Schaffhausen and ordered a stainless steel watch from IWC that was as accurate as a marine chronometer, thus giving birth to the IWC Portugieser collection. With its extreme precision and stunningly beautiful appearance, it quickly became a legend in the watch world.
