IWC was founded in 1868, with 137 years of watchmaking history. The founder of IWC was Florentine A. Portuguese collection

Tracing back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Portugal far surpassed other major powers in maritime exploration and was thus hailed as the most outstanding navigation expert of the time; they not only discovered new shipping routes and lands but subsequently helped the Swiss watchmaking industry flourish, even as late as nineteen thirty-six in the twentieth century. At that time, two Portuguese merchants, Rodrigues and Teixeira, visited Schaffhausen and ordered a stainless steel watch from IWC that was as accurate as a marine chronometer, thus giving birth to the IWC Portugieser collection.
