Which is more popular: Omega or Breitling watches?

　　Speaking ofOmega watch, most watch enthusiasts in China are familiar with the brand, but many may not be as familiar with Breitling. In reality, there is not a huge gap between Omega and Breitling; in some respects, Breitling may even rank higher. Omega's products are not necessarily better, so why is Omega more popular in China?

　　1, Price

　　If you compare watches to cars, Omega is like Volkswagen, ranging from one hundred thousand to millions, while Breitling is like Land Rover, ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions. This should make it clearer for everyone; Omega has a wider price range. With a budget of 2 ten thousand, you have multiple choices at Omega, and even women's watches can have quartz models. Setting aside the watchmaking materials, if you want to buy a Breitling, not to mention the scarcity of domestic boutiques, the budget would be at least thirty thousand, such as the Steel Fish pictured above, which is around thirty thousand. For most people, 2 ten thousand and 3 ten thousand are completely different.

　　Some might think: Breitling is more expensive but not as famous as Omega, so why should I buy it? If I spend a lot of money on a watch and others do not recognise it, what is the point? Do not be hypocritical; after all, not everyone understands watches. A large portion of people buy watches purely for the brand, a phenomenon that exists in every field, just like with classic LV or Burberry patterns.

　　Breitling collaborations are almost exclusively focused on military and water resistance. Some say Omega is more popular in China, while Breitling is more popular in Europe and America, which brings us to the physical differences between the Chinese and Western populations. Tall people are in the minority in China, and most Breitling models are around 45 inches, which means that fewer people can pull off a Breitling compared to an Omega. Personally, I also feel that Omega is more fashionable, which naturally appeals more to young people with strong social influence.

　　Let us focus solely on mechanical watches here; quartz watches lack technical depth, so we will not discuss them. Omega has invested heavily over several years to develop its in-house movements. Although Breitling now possesses a few in-house movements, the majority of its products still utilise ETA movements, as it is deeply entrenched in the mass-production cycle of ETA and cannot easily extricate itself; even its in-house movements are limited in availability. Do not claim that Breitling uses only the highest-grade ETA movements; in the eyes of most people, ETA movements are considered inferior, and replicas made with them lack technical merit. This stems from the mass production of ETA, which I will address in future articles, even if this view is somewhat one-sided. Some say that Breitling's in-house movement products are priced similarly to Omega's 8500, with a higher starting point than Omega. Regardless of whether this argument holds, others do not care; they will think: I can buy an Omega watch with an in-house movement for 5 thousand, so why would I spend 8 thousand or even over a hundred thousand on a Breitling?

　　The most important point is this: some say Omega is purely hyped up by advertising. Setting aside the veracity of this, it reflects the scale of Omega's advertising efforts. Omega can be considered a pioneer in promoting international marketing and large-scale advertising campaigns, with brand ambassadors across various fields. 007 is required to wear them year-round, as is the case with films; in the latest one, Spectre, 007 also relies on a replica watch to escape danger. However, with my personal 14 wrist, I really cannot handle the 47mm case. The moment I took off the Superocean and put on the De Ville, I felt my arm was liberated; perhaps this is just a matter of personal preference.
