Titanium alloy case vs stainless steel case: Which is better?
Currently, the main materials used for watchmaking on the market are stainless steel and titanium alloy. Although both are synthetic materials, watches crafted from titanium alloy are often priced higher than those in stainless steel. Why is that?
Material Comparison
Firstly, titanium alloy is lighter than steel, weighing only around 55% of steel. Secondly, titanium alloy is chemically more stable than steel, meaning it boasts higher corrosion resistance and hardness, and will not rust. Many aerospace applications also utilise titanium alloy to manufacture components for rockets and missiles.
Environmental Comparison
Furthermore, titanium alloy is more environmentally friendly than stainless steel and does not cause allergic skin reactions to metals. It also features shape memory properties, allowing it to sit more naturally against human skin. Therefore, although titanium alloy timepieces are slightly more expensive, they actually offer superior value for money.
Naturally, although titanium alloy is significantly better than stainless steel, it has its own noticeable drawbacks. Whilst titanium alloy is half the weight and twice as hard as steel, making it less susceptible to damage when dropped, any scratches that do occur are very conspicuous due to its bright finish. Stainless steel does not suffer from this to the same extent, and because it is heavier than titanium alloy, it provides a reassuringly substantial weight on the wrist. Ultimately, whether a titanium alloy case or a stainless steel case is better comes down entirely to personal preference.
