Over the long 178 years from 1839 to the present day, what are the characteristics of this brand's independent watchmaking? Next, let us witness them together.

Characteristics of Patek Philippe Independent Watchmaking

  1. A bird-song music box crafted by Chinese nobility

Yes, sometimes we may not fully understand the intentions of a master. Yet everyone hopes that their most valuable aspects will be appreciated and understood by more people. When Patek Philippe thought thus, the present exhibition was born—the Patek Philippe "Values Held True by a Family Watch Company" watch exhibition, opening from 5 27 to 31 at the renowned St. Regis Hotel in Singapore.

Anyone with some understanding of watches knows that Patek Philippe is currently Geneva's only family-owned watchmaking enterprise, standing as an independent watchmaking master at the pinnacle of the industry. Throughout the long 171 years from 1839 to the present day, what are the guiding values adhered to by this brand that have led to its supreme achievements today?

Independence, respect for tradition, innovation and creation, craft aesthetics, transmission of emotion... These thought-provoking values always sound a little abstract and dry, which is not as captivating as the vivid and lively discourse of the over 250 timepieces before our eyes. From 2010 new models to grand complication watches, and on to rare master-piece watches from the Patek Philippe Museum collection, this exhibition marks Patek Philippe's largest showcase of models outside of Switzerland, brilliantly presenting Patek Philippe's "dream lineup". Singapore is the first stop in Southeast Asia following New York, Los Angeles, and Milan. Wandering through the halls feels truly like unfolding a wonderful journey tracing the evolution of haute horlogerie.

2010 The new chronographs debuting at Baselworld include men's chronographs featuring the independently developed CH 29 535 PS manual-winding chronograph movement incorporating 6 patents (Ref. 5170J), split-seconds monopusher chronographs (Ref. 5950A), and perpetual calendar split-seconds monopusher chronographs (Ref. 5951P). These classic new chronographs trace their historical lineage back to the observatory chronometer pocket watches crafted by Patek Philippe in the 19th century, serving as the finest testament to innovative tradition and objects of affection for collectors.

Then come the grand complication watches. In this field, Patek Philippe can also be said to be peerless. The renowned Star Calibre 2000 is a representative piece in the exhibition. Crafted back then to welcome the new millennium, as one of the world's most complicated pocket watches, its design realized 21 rare and extraordinary complications using 1,118 parts, including six innovative patents. Other striking grand complication models also include the minute repeater tourbillon watch (Ref. 5339R) and the new Celestial watch (Ref. 6104G)—the former can chime the hours upon the wearer's request, and also allows the elegant tourbillon escapement to be admired through the case back; the latter features a realistic map of the Northern Hemisphere night sky on its dial, displaying solar time and moon phases.

Precious antique timepieces, pocket watches, self-winding watches, and antique decorative watches selected from over 2000 collection pieces in the Geneva Patek Philippe Museum also make the exhibition present a colourful brilliance. These include magnificent timepieces crafted by Patek Philippe for the Chinese market in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the 1780-1820 years, the demand for exquisite pocket watches in the Chinese market was quite substantial; particularly during the Qianlong period, top-tier precious Swiss timepieces were exceptionally popular. At that time, many pocket watch movements were manufactured in Europe, yet their artistic creation portions were completed in China.

  2. Antique vase-shaped clock

Time flows on to the present. We are able to revisit timeless oriental elements on these antique exhibits: a bird-song music box made for Chinese nobility, utilizing gold, enamel, and pearl materials, featuring a Petite Sonnerie precision mechanism that allows one to listen to bird songs and chimes while telling the time, and which can also double as a cigarette case. Feathers collected from real birds have weathered a century yet shine with an even more dazzling lustre; peony and butterfly watches, as well as pearl and strawberry vase wall clocks; pairs of Chinese watches painted with figures and scenery, blending Chinese and Western aesthetic tastes... The list goes on, vividly demonstrating the early watchmakers' relentless pursuit of craft aesthetics and rare materials.

Sitting in the audio-visual room draped with curtains on all four walls in the centre of the exhibition hall, listening in the darkness to the wonderful ticking of the Patek Philippe minute repeater in the short film, one comprehends anew in a silent, joyful instant the master craftsmen's quest for "skill transcending into the Dao". With such a mindset present, what is there that cannot be achieved to ultimate perfection?
