IWC Brand History

IWC was founded in 1868, with 137 years of watchmaking history. The founder of IWC was Florentine A. Jones, an American engineer from Boston, who established one of Switzerland's earliest mechanical watch factories in a facility by the Rhine, realising his innovative vision of using machinery to replace some manual labour to produce more precise components, which were then assembled by top watchmakers into watches of exceptional quality. IWC is renowned as " high-end watch engineer ", specialising in the manufacture of men's wristwatches. Classic styles coupled with ingenious design, elegant and refined, with extremely straightforward operation — this is the world-renowned IWC watch.

Pilot's Watches Series

The Big Pilot's Watch has been the flagship model of IWC since 2002. The genuine version houses the IWC-manufactured 51111 calibre — one of the largest automatic movements in history — combining IWC's tried and tested mechanical watchmaking expertise. Currently the largest automatic movement in the world, it is capable of generating a 8.5-day power reserve in a short time. However, as the mainspring unwinds, the torque driving the movement also diminishes, which would reduce the amplitude and accuracy of the balance wheel. Therefore, after the movement has run for 7 days without being rewound, another sophisticated small mechanism automatically stops the movement's operation to maintain absolute timekeeping accuracy.
