Ask for clear warranty details and terms when buying a watch
How would you feel if you bought a watch that broke during the warranty period, only to be told you had to pay for the repairs yourself? You were told at the time of purchase that it was drop-resistant, wear-resistant, and shock-resistant, but the crystal shattered without any impact. The watch cost 350 yuan, and the repair costs 100 yuan. This 100 yuan does not just refer to the cost of the crystal, but also requires replacing the movement, a repair method that is unacceptable.
For some unknown reason, after wearing it for less than 1 months, the glass cracked. Mr Lin visited the service counter on multiple occasions for repairs, but could never find a member of staff on duty. Due to his busy work schedule, Mr Lin left the watch at home for nearly 2 months. During the National Day holiday, he took the watch to the counter. Upon seeing the extent of the damage, the staff member stated that it was caused by external impact and therefore not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. If he wished to replace the glass, he would need to pay a repair fee of 100 yuan and postage of 25 yuan. Mr Lin felt that since the watch had just cost 350 yuan and the manufacturer promised a two-year warranty, asking for 100 yuan just for repairs was far too expensive. The assistant replied that they could waive the postage, but the 100 yuan was not just for replacing the glass; the movement also had to be replaced because they were connected, and replacing the glass required replacing the movement. Mr Lin felt that it was the glass that was damaged, not the movement, and saw no reason why the consumer should pay for the movement.
As watches are valuable and durable consumer goods, the warranty period is one year. If, after purchasing a watch, you discover genuine quality issues, you can request a return or exchange from the seller in accordance with relevant three-guarantees regulations. Returns are permitted within 7 days; within 7 to 15 days, you may only choose an exchange or repair; beyond 15 days, repairs are the only option.
The 7-day period following the purchase of a watch is extremely important. You should carefully examine the watch, and following the instructions, repeatedly familiarise yourself with and operate it so that any hidden quality issues can be identified in good time. You must properly keep the aforementioned receipts and certificates in daily life. Man-made damage, including faults caused by failure to wear the watch in accordance with the instructions, is not covered by the warranty. In particular, exterior quality issues or defects such as case scratches, cracked glass, and strap damage are rather difficult to handle, and in some cases responsibility cannot be clearly determined—even product quality and technical supervision departments are unable to make a judgement.
